Electric vehicles are the fastest-growing segment in the U.S. auto market but sales numbers are still relatively miniscule.

To overcome the often-described “chicken and egg” dilemma, on July 23, a petition was posted to Whitehouse.gov – the official site for Barack Obama’s present residence – asking for a radical increase in 480-volt DC quick charging stations across America.

President Obama has said he’d like a million plug-in cars on the road by 2015, so to help, “R.M.” of San Antonio, Tx. began the petition in hopes of getting 100,000 people to sign in one month.

As of Aug. 6, a mere 494 signatures are on this petition with 100,000 needed by Aug 22, 2013.

At this point, the signature goal looks even less likely to happen than the president’s goal, but we’re passing along the info in the event some of you may wish to sign.

Either way, America is on track to increase EVs and PHEVs sooner or later.

And at this present time also, one of the top selling plug-in cars, the Chevy Volt, would not even be able to take advantage of DC quick charging, as it’s not set up to do so.

Other cars such as the Nissan Leaf or Chevy Spark EV would, for example, and then you have Tesla but its maker says it is preparing Supercharger stations for that proprietary setup.

For now, the most reliable infrastructure for most is the 120-volt outlet or 240-volt level 2 charger at their home.

Such is not the case however for many apartment dwellers, which would lend support to the need for much more public charging.
