Mitsubishi is finding success with its Outlander PHEV in the UK.

The brand’s dealership in Birmingham, Red Rose Mitsubishi, has sold 22 new plug-in hybrid vehicles since they launched the vehicle in early June as the area continues to benefit from the government’s Plugged-in Places program. Meanwhile, Oak Tree Garages in Coventry has sold 27 and Grovebury Cars, the brand’s new dealership in Leighton Buzzard, sold 12.

“The arrival of the plug-in hybrid 4×4 SUV has caused a stir in Birmingham with plenty of interest in the car, thanks in part to the scheme that offers match-funding to businesses and public sector partners to install electric vehicle charging points,” said Gillian Hamer, Dealer Principal at Red Rose Mitsubishi.

Mitsubishi credits the Plugged-in Places program, supported by UK’s Office for Low Emission Vehicles, as being instrumental in supporting the uptake of ultra-low emission vehicles in the UK.

By the end of March 2013, more than 4,000 charge-points had been installed in the UK through the 8 Plugged-in Places projects.

The Midlands one of the eight places which has benefitted from funding, along with Milton Keynes, London, north east England, Greater Manchester, east England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

“The Outlander PHEV has been a turning point for us! As a fairly new dealership it’s opened customers eyes to fact that we’re here,” added Hamer. The best thing is people want them and at first they’re coming in to buy a PHEV but realising what else is on offer from Mitsubishi. I’ve even sold 4 or 5 Motability cars in the past month, the same as I sold in the whole of last year!”

The UK government has put in place many incentives for Brits to be tempted by elecrtrified vehicles. In the case of Mitsubishi, the Outlander PHEV benefits from £0 Vehicle Excise Duty – which means no road tax has to be paid – and it’s congestion charge-free. In addition, the Benefit in Kind (BIK) for company car drivers, which is a form of income taxation, is just 5 percent, which is a virtual pay rise of thousands of pounds per year.

“We’re a new dealership and we’ve found that 60-70 per cent of enquiries have been for PHEV, there’s so much excitement around this vehicle and what it can do,” said Simon Luddington, Grovebury Cars sales manager. “We’ve had lots of people keen to test drive it and they’re amazed by the technology. The vehicles has been described as a game-changer and it’s already been a big hit for us.”
