The all-new Audi A8 was just revealed yesterday, but there is already news leaking about the performance version: it’ll come as a hybrid.

The report is from Evo magazine, and the numbers are big. Evo said that the A8’s high-performance model, the S8, will come in S8 and faster S8 Plus forms. In this case, the Plus means green too. The S8 Plus is said to use a Porsche-sourced hybrid powertrain.

It’s the system from the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid. In that car, the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 makes 550 horsepower from the engine and an extra 136 from the electric motor. The combination makes 627 pounds-feet of torque and is claimed to hit 62 miles per hour in 3.4 seconds.

But that’s in the Porsche, and sibling Audi normally gets slightly less power than Porsche its their own cars. Instead of the combined 680 horsepower of the Panamera, Evo said to expect closer to 630 and a torque figure just under 600 pounds-feet. That should still keep the S8 Plus under four seconds to 60 mph and give a top speed near 190 miles per hour.

The report said that the “base” S8 will use the twin-turbo V8 without electric assistance. In the Audi, power is expected to be closer to 530 horses.

Expect the S8 to be announced early next year, after the A8 models have arrived at dealers.
