Despite weighing around 1,400 pounds more, a Model S P85 more than held its own in a drag race against a 2014 Corvette Stingray Z51 last week.

In the first of two sprints, the Model S gets the jump on the ‘Vette and crosses the line 0.235 seconds quicker.

The second time around the ‘Vette wins by .00774 seconds.

The Corvette on paper is rated as capable of 0-60 in 3.8 seconds which should have been able to dominate the low-four-second capability of the Model S.

Tesla’s 4,700-pound car is furthermore a four-door family sedan, and the 3,300-pound Vette coupe was refined for track day duty.

The Corvette is faster in ultimate top speed, and is better suited for going round and round in a circuit event.

It starts at around $55,000 depending on equipment. A P85 Model S starts at around 95,000 and is eligible for a $7,500 federal and potential state subsidies.
