Lucid Motors has chosen Samsung SDI as a major supplier of lithium-ion battery cells for its soon-to-be-launched electric car.

The two companies will work together jointly on the battery cells that will “exceed current performance benchmarks in areas such as energy density, power, calendar life and safety,” Lucid and Samsung said.

The Menlo Park, Calif.-based startup formerly known as Atieva has been sending out teasers that its first electric sedan will be unveiled on Dec. 14. Its battery pack, if delivered as promised, will be impressive.

The unnamed “executive sedan” will be powered by Samsung battery cells in a 100-kilowatt-hour pack with 300 miles of range, 1,000 horsepower, and a 0-to-60 mph time of less than three seconds. An optional 130-kWh pack will offer 400 miles of range, as reported by Automotive News.

Will Lucid market its electric sedan to ridesharing, ride-hailing companies like Uber and Lyft? Maybe so, said the company.

“The breakthrough battery life demonstrated by the new cell from Samsung SDI will be of tangible benefit to our customers, particularly companies with ride-sharing services operating around the clock,” Peter Rawlinson, Lucid’s chief technology officer, said in a company.

Last week, the California-based electric car startup revealed that it will be building its cars at a $700 million assembly plant in Casa Grande, Ariz. Construction will take place next year, with Lucid aiming for late 2018 as the manufacturing starting point. The company wants to start selling its electric cars by early 2019.

The company is being backed by four investors, including LeEco, the Chinese technology company whose founder, Jia Yueting, also backed now-troubled Faraday Future.

Lucid will be following Tesla’s direct-to-consumer model, avoiding franchised dealers. With a starting price above $100,000, the Lucid electric executive sedan will be taking on the Tesla Model S and other luxury carmakers with electric sedans in the works.
