The HybridCars.com monthly sales dashboard is a collaboration of HybridCars.com and Baum & Associates, a Michigan-based market research firm focusing on automotive issues including the hybrid and electric vehicle market.
June was a stellar month for the U.S. passenger vehicle market as a whole, and a strong albeit not stellar one for hybrid and electric vehicles in particular.
Overall automotive sales – on a seasonally adjusted basis – were the highest since July 2006.
Battery electric and plug in vehicles were both at high levels, with battery electric sales only exceeded by August 2013 and May of this year. June’s plug-in vehicles were only exceeded by May’s sales.
Hybrid sales declined from the strong results of May to a level in line with late last year and early this year.
Plug in vehicles as a share of the total market were at 0.46% which is their second highest share ever. The Fusion Energi (plug in) had its best month ever and leads the plug in category for the first time. This is particularly noteworthy given the fact that the mileage ratings for Ford’s hybrids, plug ins, and electrics were reduced in June. This may indicate that Ford will be devoting more marketing resources to these products.
Despite promos including 0-percent APR, $1,000 cash back and a lower $269 per month lease deal, the Volt remains at a steady level with June sales the highest so far this year. The Cadillac ELR also had its best month ever, although still at modest levels coming in at just under 100 copies.
Among battery electrics, the Nissan Leaf remains the category leader, although volumes declined from the record achieved in May. Tesla Model S volumes are steady and remain down from peak levels since the product is being sold globally.
The BMW i3 had consistent sales for its second month and availability is clearly an issue.
NOTE: We have i3 sales listed in the BEV section, but an undetermined number are range-extended. BMW does not state which are which.
The Ford Focus Electric hit an all-time record in June at 197 units, which is modest although this vehicle is designed to be sold at low volumes. As a share of total sales, battery electrics remained at last month’s strong level.
Hybrid share and volume returned to the level of prior months after a huge result last month. Given the importance of the Prius Liftback to this category, a decline in sales this month led to a similar result for the category. The Ford C-Max hybrid declined 5% from May, which represented a lesser decline than the overall category (a somewhat unexpected result given the aforementioned mileage restatement).
Diesel volume in June as compared to May was more in line with the decline in the overall market, but up significantly from June of last year. Both the Jetta and Passat fell below results obtained in each of the prior three months.
