Jaguar has announced next fall it will return to motorsports by way of the all-electric FIA Formula E Championship.

The company bowed out from racing after a disappointing F1 season in 2004, but with the advent of electrification, the company also at work on electrified passenger cars sees synergy in the budding open-wheel EV series.

A statement by Group Engineering Director for Jaguar Land Rover Nick Rogers outlined the company’s take on the subject.

“I am proud to announce Jaguar’s return to racing with an entry into the innovative FIA Formula E Championship. Electric vehicles will absolutely play a role in Jaguar Land Rover’s future product portfolio and Formula E will give us a unique opportunity to further our development of electrification technologies. The championship will enable us to engineer and test our advanced technologies under extreme performance conditions,” said Rogers.

“It is my belief that over the next five years we will see more changes in the automotive world than in the last three decades,” he continued. “Formula E has recognized and reacted to these trends and the championship’s exciting and pioneering approach is the perfect fit for our brand.”

Jaguar will enter in the third season of Formula E, and join other names including Andretti, Renault, Venturi, Audi and more in the series that is still very regulated as to what cars can be.

It started as a pure spec class series with identical cars fielded by all teams, and still requires the same chassis and battery, though liberty has now been granted to teams to develop their own powertrains.

In time, greater latitude in the design and construction of independent team cars is expected, and Jaguar sees an opportunity in it all – even if a video intended to invoke excitement evokes imagery from its gas-burning heritage.

CEO of Formula E said he is happy to have team Jaguar join the series.

“We are delighted to welcome Jaguar into Formula E. Jaguar is a brand with a rich sporting heritage and the fact that it is returning to global motorsport with Formula E is a huge endorsement of the championship and its ability to influence the development of electric cars. Jaguar brings with it a passionate fan base that will drive the popularity of the championship across the world and once again shows that Formula E is the future of motorsport.”
