The Hyundai i30 hatchback is getting a fresh new look, based on spy images captured by Auto Express, and it’s expected to include EV powertrains from the Ioniq.

Although the car in copyrighted (thus not shown) pictures remains under camouflage, its influence from the Ioniq’s front-end design is evident. You can view the Auto Express spy shots here, with the i30 towing a trailer.

The next generation i30 would benefit from the Ioniq’s electrified powertrain offerings. Other Hyundai models are expected to receive the Ioniq’s hybrid and plug-in technologies as Hyundai races to meet tough new European Union emissions regulations due in 2020.

Hyundai is getting ready to compete more with Toyota for its domination of hybrid sales through the Prius hatchback. Hyundai sees an electrified version of the Hyundai i30 as a strong competitor in the highly competitive c-segment market. In the U.K. market, the i30 will go up against other c-segment hatchbacks like the Toyota Auris.

Revealed at this year’s Geneva Motor Show in March, the Ioniq broke new ground for Hyundai in offering three different electric powertrains in one body shell. When the Ioniq launches in October this year in the U.K., Hyundai will push hard in marketing its three powertrains in one body style heavily to break the Toyota Prius’ stranglehold on the hybrid car market, said Sylvie Childs, senior product manager at Hyundai UK.
