Thanks for the summary on the plug in effort. Why isn't the media paying more attention to this? The "solution," LITERALLY, is within our grasp.

All the pieces of the puzzle can come come together if only we will ACT. We need some progressive policy from Washington. I really think we need to pass a trigger oil import fee to "inform" the public and the automakers that they've got to GET MOVING with this transformation. An import fee that kicked in only when the world oil price falls below say $65.00 per barrel (It's $72.00 as I write this) would create a floor price for petroleum of...ta da...$65.00 per barrel in this country. By doing that, a little economic certainty would enable these alternative technologies to flourish. Our trade deficit would be cut in half if we stopped importing oil and we CAN DO IT.

What happens if the world price of oil crashes to say $20?? Our government collects a massive tarriff. Of course, once we stop importing oil, they won't collect anything and noone will care. We'll all be driving highly efficient electic hybrids that cost a fraction per mile for energy of what we're paying today.

We would also stop sending massive $$ to the very countries that are trying to destroy the west (ie IRAN). The best way to de-fang IRAN is to eliminate our oil imports. Then Iran can be safely embargoed. Right now, the world needs their oil too badly and we are all literally over their fanatical barrel.

I doubt a US boycott of Iranian oil would impact them much. They would just sell more oil to China and India.

I drive a new Prius . Each tank of gas I get an extra mi per gal. Im at 46 right now. But its hard to relearn to drive after all these years with a lead foot. This is the only car that you can learn and slightly modify your driving and get 20% greater gas milelage. My wife gets 37 when she drives. She hasen't learned yet. and back seats drives when in the car with me. with coments like " why are you slowing down now "" speed up" "do you know what the speed limit is" LOL. I now answer "look at my cumulative mileage" and she quiets right up and says OHH I forgot"

The Prius should be an electric car first, with a high-end gas powered electric generator that kicks in when the batteries need a recharge. As the documentary film suggested the vast majority of commutes are well within the range of a full battery charge. Then the cars can be sitting while at work being recharged from the grid and/or from solar panels in the skin. The on-board generator is the means by which the vehicles can sustain locomotion when extended trips are taken.

I have found my 2006 Prius to be full of compromises. The electric motor is clearly underpowered and does not enable the car to be driven efficiently in the city. Yes, I do get good mileage but it is still best on the highway, not the city as promised. If the battery/electric motor were more robust it would do much better in city driving.
