Manual Transmission

I learned drive a manual very quickly, but have kept learning for 46 years. I take pride as well as pleasure in my ability to drive a manual well. I have never owned an automatic transmission in my life (and never burned out a clutch, either), and am not about to start now!

I have two pet peeves related to driving. One is that so few people know enough to pull to the left or right before making a turn, so that following traffic can pass, the other is the dumbing-down of driving, including the gradual disappearance of manual transmissions. I don't know which I hate more. I have to wonder, are people too lazy to drive manuals, or are we too stupid? I think it's a case of the public buying whatever the industry wants to sell us. I think we should be more discriminating, and I think that industry should make what we want.
