Secretive electric car startup Faraday Future yesterday announced that it had partnered with LG Chem to supply lithium-ion cells for its future battery electric cars.

The Chinese-owned California-based electric car company made a splash at the Consumer Electronics Show in January by showing its FFZero1, a 1,000 horsepower concept that can jet from 0 to 60 mph in less than three seconds.

The concept is the only car that has been shown, but spy photographs suggest the company has more conventional styled vehicles in the works.

South Korea’s LG Chem is a leading supplier of advanced electric vehicle batteries, providing lithium-cells for Tesla’s first car, the Roadster, and more recently, Chevrolet’s Bolt.

The Bolt is a breakthrough EV with an EPA driving range of more than 230 miles per charge that can cost less that $30,000 after government tax incentives.

In a press release, Faraday Future said the partnership would result in the development of the “world’s highest energy density for a production automotive battery.”

That’s a claim that can’t be proven until the cars actually arrive, but it is an indication that they could have extraordinary range compared to what is available today as more energy stored means a longer driving distance.

“LG Chem worked closely with Faraday Future to develop a tailored cell chemistry to optimize the range and safety of our mass production battery hardware,” said Tom Wessner, Faraday Future vice president of global supply chain, in a statement.

Faraday vehicles will be built using what the company calls its “VPA’ platform, a design engineered to uderpin a variety of vehicle types and sizes.

LG Chem’s battery cells will be grouped into sixes that create a string, which is then aligned alongside other strings, the number of which depends on the vehicle’s size.

Although Faraday won’t produce the batteries as Tesla does for its cars, the relationship it has with LG Chem appears to be similar to that of Tesla and battery maker Panasonic.

Such a relationship can lead to batteries that are cheaper, more efficient and more powerful, resulting in EVs that are more attractive to consumers.

Based on a Faraday teaser photo, it’s believed their first vehicle will be a crossover SUV that will arrive close to the end of 2017.

It’s then we’ll know if the partnership can deliver a vehicle with a mega range at an affordable price.
