Over the holiday weekend, Tesla CEO Elon Musk gave Tesla fans another reason to celebrate when he tweeted that after Model Y production begins, he’ll be focusing his attention on a pickup truck.

In his Twitter exchange, Musk said he is “dying to build it,” and went so far as to say that it’ll likely be larger than the current Ford F-150 pickup. Why will it be larger? “To account for a really gamechanging (I think) features I’d like to add,” said Musk.

To be a full-line automaker, Tesla would have to produce a pickup truck at some point. What’s more, pickup trucks are the best-selling vehicles in the country, and have been for over 35 years. Pickup trucks also typically bring higher profit margins to automakers, at least in the conventional-tech space, though how an EV version might fare is an open question.

During the announcement of the Tesla Semi, the company showed a rendering of a potential pickup truck offering that included a current-generation pickup next to it for size reference. The truck was quite large, which leaves open doubt that the mega-sized vehicle would be the final design.

In the United States, full-size pickup trucks (sometimes still referred to as half-ton trucks) have grown in both size and capability. The 2018 Ford F-150, which touts best-in-class numbers across the board for towing and payload, can have a wheelbase of up to 163.7 inches and large dimensions. That makes it difficult to park in most garages.

Smaller size is one of the reasons why midsize pickups, like the Toyota Tacoma and Chevrolet Colorado, have grown in popularity. They have the capability that most people need and can still maneuver relatively easily in cities and will fit in most garages.

Another concern regarding the truck rendering is how difficult it would be to get cargo in and out of the bed. People often reach over the sides of the bed to get supplies in and out, and with the Tesla pickup truck rendering that’d be impossible.

The rendering resembles a heavy duty Class 3 truck or larger, which is why it remains doubtful the final product would be as big as the rendering.

Otherwise, an electric pickup truck is an offering that stands to make sense. The instant torque of an electric motor should help the truck achieve strong payload and towing numbers. Not having to purchase fuel would also likely be a benefit for fleet buyers who buy work trucks in bulk.

Tesla has said it hopes to produce as many as one million vehicles globally by 2020. A pickup truck would likely help them get to that number sooner. But the truck is still a few years away.

Tesla is still ramping up their Model 3 production before the Model Y, based on the Model 3, debuts. Then Musk said he’d focus on the truck. Additionally, the company is working on both the Semi and the new Roadster.
