You can expect an electric Porsche SUV to arrive not long after the German automaker launches its forthcoming electric sedan, the Taycan.

Porsche’s financial director, Lutz Meschke, told Autocar in a recent interview that we can “expect a SUV BEV (battery electric vehicle),” from Porsche by 2022 at the latest. This comes as no surprise, seeing as its rivals, such as Mercedes-Benz and Audi, just recently launched electric crossovers. Additionally, former VW Group boss and Porsche CEO Matthias Muller previously expressed a desire for every VW Group brand to have an electrified version of every model by 2023, so an electric Porsche SUV or crossover was always in the cards.

Meschke referred to the vehicle as a “big SUV” which means it will probably be similar in size to the Cayenne. It’s not clear if the vehicle will be based on the Cayenne, or if it will be based on the Audi E-Tron. It could tap a new pure electric crossover platform as well.

Autocar also reports the Taycan sedan, which is expected to launch in 2020, will spawn a two-door Targa model. The publication claims this vehicle could feature a shorter wheelbase and a retracting glass roof that slides away into the vehicle’s rear hatch area. Interestingly, a recent Porsche press release appears to corroborate the development of some type of two-door Taycan-based vehicle.

“The Taycan is one of biggest creators of jobs in the history of Porsche,” Porsche board member Andreas Haffner said. “Not all of these new employees will be producing the Taycan; they will also build two-door sports cars. Porsche’s aim for the Taycan is to create a team with a healthy mix of experienced sports car manufacturers and new staff.”

The two-door model will bring the Taycan lineup to three cars, with the high-riding Mission E Cross Turismo Concept (below) expected to reach production as a brawny, off-road capable pure electric wagon.

The Cayman and Boxster may be electrified one day as well, Meschke said. We knew Porsche was interested in this endeavor after it showed the Cayman E-Volution concept last year, but it now seems like an inevitability with how much the company talks about such a vehicle. The electrified Cayman concept had all-wheel drive and a 38 kWh battery providing an electric driving range of around 120 miles. It also boasted a 0-60 mph time of just 3.3s and a top speed of 120 mph.

With three Taycan variants on the way, along with an electric SUV and a potential electric Cayman/Boxster, those in Porsche’s battery-powered vehicles department will certainly be busy in the coming years. Don’t forget the forthcoming new plug-in hybrid 911, either, which is expected to launch in 2022.
