A recent publicity stunt in Australia by Quantas Airlines pits one of its Boeing 737s in a drag race of sorts with a Tesla Model S P90D.

Naturally the race took place at an airport where the passenger aircraft was outgunned at least out of the hole by the Tesla which is billed as capable of 0-60 in 2.8 seconds.

Once the airplane got rolling near its 140 knot takeoff speed, however, well … this is about as apple-to-orange a matchup as one can get.

A Boeing 737 is a flying bus that is pretty quick, if not as quick as a performance sedan. Its maximum speed is Mach 0.82 (544 mph) and its range is a bit farther too.

But one takeaway is the Model S is a cool car, cool enough for an airline company to want to be associated with it.

Staged races between aircraft versus land vehicles have been done at various times before if for no other reason than to satisfy curiosity and the ever-present need for the next infotainment buzz fix.
