In 2016 Mercedes-Benz announced its EQ sub brand of electrified vehicles. The move came after some hesitation, and mirrors what BMW has done with its “i” series of BMW-braned cars. Mercedes-Benz CEO Dieter Zetsche said the brand will be Mercedes’ answer also to Tesla. At the time, Mercedes-Benz said it plans to have 10 electric cars by 2025 – a number we believe could be revised depending on how plans and the market progress. The first model will be the Generation EQ Concept electric crossover SUV displayed in Paris and scheduled for production in 2019. Mercedes said the SUV would have two electric motors, and a 70-kWh lithium-ion battery that is good for more than 300 miles (500 kilometers) of zero emissions driving range that could be charged in just five minutes.
