Swiss power technology company ABB has introduced a new electric vehicle charger, claiming the world’s fastest charging rate.

Presented at the Hannover Messe trade show in Germany, the charging system delivers up to 350 kW. This translates to an 8-minute charge time and additional 125 miles of range for a 300-350 kW rated vehicle, compatible with vehicles reaching 800 V. Its two-plug configuration also allows it to change more than EV at a time. Its 350 kW output is also equal to seven times the output of standard 50kW DC chargers.

“We are committed to supporting the expansion of electric vehicle charging systems across the globe to drive cleaner environments,” said Frank Muehlon, head of Global Business for Electric Vehicle Charging at ABB. “Creating innovative state-of-the-art and energy efficient solutions which are scalable to expand and flex with our customers’ needs is at the heart of ABB’s philosophy.”

Since 2010, ABB has contributed towards charging infrastructure technology, installing more than 6,000 cloud-based chargers through infrastructure development contracts around the world.

In an earlier announcement, ABB also detailed its collaboration with Electrify America to install electric vehicle chargers at 100-plus Walmart locations through June of next year, with a total planned investment of $2 billion towards 2000-plus chargers over the next decade. Other sites will include Target and Brixmor and Kimmo-Owner shopping centers, in one of the largest efforts yet at besting Tesla’s Supercharger network.
