How much will it cost to buy a new battery? Battery costs will come down in time. 20 years from now a replacement battery pack with OEM range will probably be very cheap. You could of course get an aftermarket upgraded pack that has a couple times the range that the Volt has now.

Just look at Prius battery packs, they go for $1000 or less on Ebay.

Has anyone seen figures on the depreciation and resale value for one of these cars?
Prices for used Prius vehicles hold up very well, and have been stable despite the fluctuating costs of fuel. This resale value helps indicate confidence of secondary buyers in the dependability and value of the vehicle as it gets "older." I am wondering if the Volt enjoys this high resale value and market confidence as well.

How much something DOES cost is easy to figure out. How much something WILL cost is completely unpredictable for this kind of product. No one has ever made one like it.

Let's say I invent "the next big thing." It's a wonderful product, something you'll keep for years. I sell it for $50. What will it be worth in 10 years? Who knows? There aren't any that are 10 years old yet. It might be useless in 10 years, it might hold its value in 10 years, it might become useful for some completely other purpose in 10 years, and it might be completely useless but somehow valuable to collectors in 10 years. There is no way to tell. Aside from time travel. Which we're working on. I'm not holding my breath.

I wouldn't buy a Volt for its condition in 10 years though. I'd buy a Volt for what I like about it right now. Even if the battery is removed from the car in 10 years, the Volt still has a regular engine, and it will tool around just like the Cruze, or the Cobalt, or the Cavalier, or any other compact car before it.

Kelly did not know if a replacement battery price had been issued yet as everything has been under warranty to date, and no Volt owner has had to buy one. I could have called a dealer to double check, but did not. That would be a quick way to find for certain, but my deadline was after hours.

Also, keep in mind even if there is a price stated at the dealer parts department today, it may be less in several years time, or there may even be a better replacement in the future.
