Want To Design Domino’s Next Delivery Vehicle?

How would you like to have a hand in designing a next-generation pizza delivery vehicle? … And even have a hand at influencing its alternative tech powertrain choices?

What do you think? Would having pizza delivered across America through electric or hybrid power be neat?

If so, you may be interested to know that today Local Motors, in partnership with Domino’s Pizza, announced the first phase of a five-stage competition to create the ultimate pizza delivery vehicle.

Domino’s has engaged the Local Motors global community of designers, fabricators, engineers and enthusiasts to help them revolutionize pizza delivery. The Domino’s Ultimate Delivery Vehicle Challenge, powered by Local Motors, will launch through the Forge at LocalMotors.com on Monday.

Local Motors is mostly known for its Rally Fighter, pictured, a crowd-sourced and -designed vehicle using both proprietary parts and parts from mainstream manufacturers like Ford and Honda.

The first competition will be a five-week Design Competition, running from Aug. 13 through Sept. 23, in which the concept, overall look and feel for the vehicle will be defined. Complete competition details will be outlined in a comprehensive design brief and video released by Local Motors on Monday.

“The Local Motors Community of over 18,000 enthusiasts, established in the principles of open source and co-creation, generates vehicles of the future,” said Jay Rogers, Local Motors CEO and co-founder. “We are excited to partner with Domino’s Pizza to design a worldwide, game-changing delivery experience for its customers by co-creating the Ultimate Delivery Vehicle.”

The competition will engage Domino’s customers and members of the Local Motors Forge in five phases of competition that will conclude in February 2013, culminating in a prototype production of the world’s first ultimate pizza delivery vehicle.

Design: Begins Aug. 13; ends Sept. 23

Packaging: Begins Oct. 30; ends Nov. 12

Interior: Begins Nov. 27; ends Dec. 11

Surfacing: Begins Jan. 8, 2013; ends Jan. 22, 2013

Rendering: Begins Feb. 5, 2013; ends Feb.19, 2013

Prize amounts vary per competition. In all, more than $50,000 in prize money will be awarded along with the opportunity to see the top designs in each competition through to prototype.
