Engineers know what fuel millage they will get before the thing is even drawn up, any of the diesel hybrid prototypes are currently getting 160+ MPG. But somehow when this car gets to the US it will get no better than the current gas hybrid. Just look at any diesel car coming to the US. I don't believe in too many conspiracy’s for the most part but when a car that does 59 mpg only gets half that when marketed in the US you have to believe something is going on. This thing will never come into the US at 160 mpg.

This a long proven technology as passenger trains here in the US have had a similar configuration (diesel-generator>electric motor drive) for six of seven decades. Why it has taken so long to be applied to personal transport is frustrating. It's even more frustrating that it's taking so long now that, to use an old phrase, "the cat is out of the bag". As someone has already noted this technology should be applied to trucks ASAP.

This would be perfect for my wife to drive around town with our 2 kids, and then for us to take on long road trips. She's probably under the electric range each day, and the diesel would carry us for the distance.

Not sure we can afford it though. If it's not under $30k, I'd have to carefully consider our budget. I'd love to have this car instead of our minivan!

This thing will never come into the US at 160 mpg. It’s time to start taking matters into our own hands and start are own car company and build these diesel hybrids in the US. If I can get some financial backing I will give it a shot. Time to start pushing the big car makers out, they’re not here to help us anymore than the oil companies are. The demand is huge for an affordable cars that the average Joe can drive and get over 60MPG but because that’s the main consumer market of GAS you will not see any affordable low MPG cars. But we live in the America so we can do something about it, not government regulation, rely on good old capitalism and build a car that everyone can and will buy, and that's how it's done in America.

Great engineering job by VW! It may be impractical to include all these features in one vehicle. The Li batteries would be costly. Diesel engines cost more. Hybrid costs more. All electric costs more. Would you pay $50000 for a small SUV with all the features or just get a Honda CRV for $23000? I don't know what the Cross Coupe would cost, but it will have to compete with current SUVs.
I love my Passatt TDI!
Somebody tell VW that a Coupe has 2 doors.

Finally something that may make sense if CA anti-diesel bunch of numb skulls permits it. Interesting if is available at a reasonable price with batteries replaceable by cell and decent range say 500 miles. Looks like it may have capacity to carry a family. How about a pickup that can tow a decent RV?
