Based on my own calculations, the Volts sold this year will save more Gas than any car except the Prius Liftback. They will save more energy than all but the Prius liftback and the Prius C. This is based on a comparison to a normal gas car that gets 32mpg overall and using 12000 miles per year.

It wont take long to take the top spot in both if the sales keep increasing.

Eventually people will figure out what a great car the Volt is and then we'll stop comparing it to a Prius. I drove a friend's RX 350 today. Compared to the Volt, it was noisy, slow off the line, wasn't very responsive, and had numb steering. It cost the same as a Volt before the tax credit, so more expensive.

If you didn't need the space there is no way you'd take the RX for the same money, and the money isn't the same. And that's before considering how much the Volt would save you in fuel costs.

Like I said, eventually people will figure this out.

With the mainstreaming of PHEVs/EREVs, like the ongoing acceptance of the Volt, the PI Prius variant and the upcoming PI Accord, isn’t it time to start rolling the Plug Ins into the hybrid category. They are at their heart hybrids. And it may finally show hybrids cresting 3%.
