Volkswagen’s I.D. Crozz Crossover EV Concept Revealed In Shanghai

Volkswagen has confirmed that the third vehicle in the I.D. series will be an all-electric crossover named the I.D. Crozz.

The German automaker released more details during Auto Shanghai 2017, including a video and photo gallery that you can view below.

VW is selling the I.D. Crozz as having the latest in EV technology combined with the interior space and convenience of a crossover built on the modular electric drive (MEB) platform. Its exterior design was built around combining “the rugged look of an SUV with the elegance of a coupe,” said VW.

As for electric drive performance, it has 302 horsepower and can reach a top speed of 112 mph. Range is estimated at 311 miles on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) standard. That distance will be much lower in the U.S. under Environmental Protection Agency measures. It could very well be in the lower 200 miles range in the U.S. as the 238-mile range Chevy Bolt EV is rated also for 311 miles in Europe as the Opel Ampera-e.

Volkswagen said that using a 150 kW DC fast charger can produce an 80 percent recharge within 30 minutes.

For the crossover utility’s convenience, the company said that compared to the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan, I.D. Crozz will be smaller and have a lower roofline but just as much storage space. That’s one of the benefits of the new MEB configuration. MEB models will have a very long wheelbase combined with compact powertrain components and a battery pack placed under the floor panels.

That will mean having plenty of “Open Space,” VW said.

Designers worked to make the pillar roof supports holding up that open space out of sight for those riding in the crossover. Side windows have a low, elongated look and the B- and C-pillars are behind glass and effectively invisible.

Putting more thought into exterior design and interior space and convenience have been part of I.D. vehicle development using the MEB concept, said Klaus Bischoff, head of design for the Volkswagen brand.

“If it was ever possible to make a one-hundred percent certain prediction of what the future will look like, here it is. In 2017, we are showing how Volkswagen will be transforming the roadscape from 2020. For us, the three prototypes of this new generation of zero-emission vehicles – I.D., I.D. Buzz and I.D. Crozz – mark the start of a design and technology revolution that is going to change individual mobility and the Volkswagen brand forever,” he said.

It’s part of VW’s larger strategy of ramping up to high-volume EV production by the middle of the next decade.

“By 2025, we want to have sales of pure electric vehicles up to one million units a year.  The I.D. Crozz will play a key role in that. Production will start in 2020,” said Herbert Diess, VW’s chairman of the board.

The I.D. Crozz will have access to automated driving functions that the German automaker is developing. In “I.D. Pilot” mode, the driver can touch the VW logo on the steering wheel for three seconds to have the vehicle take over the drive. Interior lighting switches over from white to a more relaxed “magenta/violet” as laser scanners and sensors scan road conditions. That’s aided by ultrasonic and radar sensors, side area view cameras, and a front camera.

The design team also focused on using lighting elements interactively emulating the human eye, which it calls an ‘interactive spotlight.’ The idea here is to integrate the I.D. lineup with the latest in electric drive, automated features, and the stylish design VW is aiming toward.

While parked, I.D. Crozz has all its systems shut down, as it if its eyes are closed and the vehicle is asleep. All you can see is a thin LED strip in the headlights when the crossover is parked.

Once the vehicle is ready to move, passengers are greeted with a 360-degree light show where glass VW badges at the front and rear hatch light up in the brand’s traditional blue and white. Ambient lighting transitions during the drive, such as the ‘eyes’ (LED lighting) adjusting to higher speeds through narrower and concentrated focus.
