2009 Chevy Aveo

In almost every category that counts—acceleration, comfort, style—the Chevrolet Aveo doesn’t compete with its rivals in the subcompact category: the Honda Fit, Hyundai Accent, Kia Rio, Nissan Versa, and Toyota Yaris. The only place where it holds its ground is low cost—and even there it is beat to the bottom by the Kia Rio by about $1,000. (Both cars are built in Korea.)

Compare the Aveo!

If you're thinking about buying a Toyota Prius, you might also consider a Ford Focus or Kia Rio. Compare these vehicles.

The Chevy Aveo is available as a subcompact sedan or four-door hatchback called the Aveo5. Chevrolet revised the Aveo's four-cylinder engine for 2009. It now has variable valve timing, and fuel economy has improved as a result. Despite the change, the Aveo’s rating of 25 mpg in the city and 34 on the highway—quite respectable—falls slightly behind the more expensive Fit and Yaris, and the cheaper Kia Rio.

HybridCars.com took the Aveo5 on a road test, and achieved 32.8 miles per gallon in a 162-mile roundtrip test loop from Churchville, Md. to Philadelphia, Pa. and back. Approximately 80 percent of the mixed drive was comprised of 50-mile-per-hour state routes and two-lane highways, while about 20 percent took place through in-town traffic.

Both Aveo models come with a 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engine that makes 107 horsepower and 106 pound-feet of torque. It's paired with a five-speed manual transmission or an optional four-speed automatic only available on the LT trim levels.

Three trim levels are offered: Special Value, LS and LT. Special Value is offered on the Aveo5 only and comes with minimal features. Standard equipment includes 14-inch steel wheels, manual mirrors and windows, manual locks, side airbags and a radio with four speakers. The LS adds air-conditioning and carpeted floor mats, as well as the availability of options such as cruise control, a sunroof, antilock brakes, power windows, keyless entry, a CD/MP3 player and 15-inch alloy wheels. The LT trim is available on the sedan only. It includes most of the LS model's options as standard and can be ordered with leatherette seating and an upgraded audio system.

The interior offers theater-style rear seating, a fully reclining front passenger seat, and a 60/40-split folding rear seat. The sedan's trunk offers 12.4 cubic feet of storage space. The Aveo5 also has a fold-down rear seat and it can carry up to 42 cubic feet of cargo.

The 2009 five-door Aveo hatchback gets a face-lift and refreshed interior design, which does little to bring in new customers. All models have an auxiliary audio jack and OnStar (with a year of service) as standard. Upgraded trim levels also get satellite radio.
