Tesla Working On Letting Owners Repair Their Cars

The days of Tesla owners driving hundreds of miles to get their vehicles serviced may be at an end.

Most current Tesla owners are the mercy of the automaker to find a Tesla service center that can work on their vehicle. There is the “Right to Repair” program in Massachusetts, which forces electronic manufacturers to make their service and diagnostic manuals, as well as replacement components available to independent repair shops and consumers. But that’s the only state where owners get this kind of information on their Tesla models. According to a report from by Electrek, Tesla President Jon McNeill is working on expanding the program.

In a response to an owner on the Tesla Motors Club forum who said the electric automaker should “allow us to perform our own maintenance, which involves releasing service info and software as well as sell us parts,” McNeill responded that a program to address all of the owner’s concerns is “in the works.”

The idea of providing owners with the necessary guides and tools to repair their own vehicles is a necessary one if the electric automaker looks to become as mainstream as traditional automakers.

As Electrek points out, the “Right to Repair” program in Massachusetts isn’t exactly cheap. Obtaining access to the information through a one-hour subscription, for instance, costs $30, while an annual subscription runs $3,000. The only way around paying the substantial fee is to get certified as a “Tesla Approved Body Shop,” which isn’t an easy process.

Other states, including Nebraska, New York, Minnesota, and Kansas, have all introduced new “Right to Repair” bills, reports Electrek that are modeled after Massachusetts’ Motor Vehicle Owners’ Right to Repair Act.

While makings guides and parts available for owners sounds like a good idea, electric cars, despite having powertrains that are less complex than gas-powered vehicles, are still difficult to work on. Tesla’s electric vehicles have a lot of complicated components that may prove too difficult for the average owner to replace.
