Reports have it that the car will go on sale in 2015 meaning it will likely be brought out some time next year. It is based on VW’s newest weight-shedding platform that cuts 220 pounds from the last generation Euro model.

When it arrives, buyers will get the full GTI treatment – albeit badged as a “GTD” – along with a 2.0-liter powerplant producing 182 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque at 1,750 rpm. Characteristic of diesels, this is a large share of the total output at low rpms unlike gas counterparts which typically must be spun higher to wring out such performance.

Styling will include 17-inch wheels shod with 225/45/17 tires, GTI-inspired bodywork including a rear roof spoiler. It will ride on a sport-tuned suspension, and interior accents include stainless steel pedals and a sports steering wheel.

Pricing is not known, nor is EPA fuel economy, but expect it to be priced beyond the upper priced TDI models already in the U.S.

VW actually unveiled around a half-dozen new Golfs and these will arrive later this year as 2014 models.
