Subaru steadily climbed in a shopper loyalty study for Q1 2013 to the No. 3 position, residing among the top-three brands for the first time since Q4 2009.

“As current Subaru owners prepare to off-load their current vehicle, it is easy to reconsider the brand as it offers a diverse lineup, including models that not only appeal to the everyday shopper like the all-new 2014 Forester, but also a sportier option like the BRZ,” said Akshay Anand, Kelley Blue Book Insights analyst of its survey data collected. “With Subaru’s first-ever hybrid vehicle arriving at dealerships in Q4 2013, the 2014 XV Crosstrek Hybrid is expected to help the brand retain even more shoppers as its portfolio expands into hybrid technology.”

A manufacturer known for its hybrid vehicles is holding its ground as the No. 1 brand in terms of shopper loyalty for six consecutive quarters: Toyota, which held 53.6 percent if its owners’ interest in Q1 2013. Honda is in second place with 50.8 percent (Subaru is at 49.9 percent).

“Toyota’s esteemed stance as the leading automaker in KBB.com shopper loyalty continues into Q1 2013 with help from the recently redesigned 2013 RAV4,” said Anand. “For those shoppers interested in a full-size sedan, Toyota also saw a surge of shopper interest to its redesigned 2013 Avalon, showcasing the brand’s positive response from consumers with its updated styling and features.”

While Hyundai and Kia garnered tremendous success during the past few years, these brands dropped in shopper loyalty among KBB.com’s new-car audience, which can be attributed to the lack of redesigns or refreshes in the last year from both Korean companies from key models.

Hyundai continued its slow fall from No. 4 in Q4 2012 to No. 6 in Q1 2013, while Kia dropped from the No. 4 spot between Q4 2011 and Q2 2012 to the No. 7 position in Q1 2013.

“Hyundai is expected to regain shopper loyalty when the brand’s best-selling Sonata is updated for 2014,” said Anand. ”Not only will the redesigned Sonata help it compete better with its rivals, but it also will catch the eye of new-car shoppers with its fuel economy and affordability.”

Kelley Blue Book Market Intelligence examines shopper loyalty while consumers are still in the shopping phase. For this analysis, shopper loyalty is defined as owners of the brand who are currently shopping the same brand for their next new vehicle. This includes data from consumers who view a trade-in page or private party page, in addition to a new-car page on Kelley Blue Book’s KBB.com.

Subaru of America said today that it will please everyone with an AWD Twin-Turbo Convertible two-seater Diesel Hybrid BRZ for sale in 2015.

Subaru felt compelled to release this information following continued media and internet speculation,

Subaru declared the new model essentially takes all of the media and internet rumors surrounding the highly successful BRZ sports car and delivers them in one fell swoop.

A spokesman for the company said: “Having just launched the current model to widespread critical acclaim, we are tired of fighting off the constant speculation about what’s “next” and so we are just giving in and delivering all the speculation in one vehicle.”

No, Subaru did not explain how all this technology would fit in this diminutive sporty two-seater. Subaru did not neither release fuel consumption estimates.

Strangely, Subaru did say the new model, which is expected to have a starting price, will however not come with a much anticipated rear back-up camera. The spokesman confirmed that after shoehorning two convertible switches (up and down) onto the dash there just wasn’t room for any more instruments.

The AWD Turbo Convertible two-seater Diesel Hybrid BRZ will come in a single color, noseeum black, a color that looks fishy-blue to us.

The sporty contraption will be hand produced at Subaru’s Brigadoon facility.

And this is how Subaru celebrates April 1st. Enjoy!

Better late than never might be the adage Subaru is applying to what may be the Japanese automaker’s first foray into the mass-market with a hybrid vehicle.

The Detroit Bureau is reporting that Kenichi Yamamoto, director of product management at Subaru of America, has said that Subaru’s parent company, Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI) is working on a hybrid vehicle.

Yamamoto didn’t offer further details, but according to the Bureau other company representatives also confirmed that a hybrid was on the way, and may make its debut in March at the New York Auto Show.

As far back as May 2009 Subaru’s parent was promising a hybrid for release in 2012, saying that Toyota would assist in the car’s development. In 2005 Subaru unveiled a concept hybrid called the B5 TPH Hybrid.

During the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show Fuji Heavy Industries reconfirmed plans for a hybrid model, saying such a car would help the company meet stricter U.S. fuel economy requirements. Two years later, during the 2011 Detroit Auto Show, FHI officials pushed the unveiling of a hybrid to 2013.

Sales in the U.S. have grown considerably for the last four years, with record figures posted in 2012. The Detroit Bureau writes that Yamamoto said that in addition of a hybrid for the U.S. Subaru must also offer a hybrid model to its Japanese customers.

According to a new report from Reuters at the 2011 Detroit auto show, Subaru executives are planning their first hybrid model for the United States in 2013. Sound familiar?

That’s because one year ago in Detroit, Masatsugu Nagato, the director of the board of Fuji Heavy Industries, Subaru’s parent company, promised its first hybrid in 2012. “New cars are coming and hybrid is coming,” Nagato was quoted in the New York Times. “So, we want to make it the same timing. From a development point of view, it is very convenient.”

HybridCars.com has been tracking Subaru’s hybrid announcements for a few years. In May 2009, when Subaru first announced plans to introduce a gas-electric hybrid car by 2012, readers of this website responded with enthusiasm. Family Guy wrote, “I want it. My 2002 Outback will be 10 years old by 2012. Now, I can look forward to the possibility of replacing my Subaru with a hybrid from Subaru. Woo!” But others appeared tired of waiting. TS wrote, “We leased a 2005 Outback, hoping they’d have a hybrid by the time the lease was up. Didn’t happen. Too bad. Bought a Prius now. They missed a window.” William admonished Subaru, “Toe dipping in the hybrid pool is useless.”

In the past few years, Subaru has:

<ul
Shown the Subaru B5 TPH (for Turbo Parallel Hybrid) two-seat concept car

Tested its diminutive Subaru R1e all-electric two-seat city car in the U.S.

Launched the limited-run R1e-derived Subaru Stella 50-mile EV in Japan. (According to Japan’s Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper, the Stella will be killed off in March.)

Repeated displayed the Subaru Tourer concept

Contradictory Reports

Before Subie fans give up all hope on an all-wheel drive high-mpg hybrid, take notice of a report last week from U.K.’s Autocar website, indicating that Subaru will eventually roll out a number of styling changes that “are likely to feature on a string of new cars, including the Subaru version of the Toyota FT-86 sports coupé and a hybrid variant of the Legacy.” The report says that in 2013, Subaru will incorporate the looks of a new Impreza Concept “into a new Legacy hybrid that makes use of Toyota technology.” The Toyota hybrid system is likely to use a 2.5-liter turbocharged boxer engine in unison with a CVT gearbox, according to Autocar.

Yet, Tom Doll, chief operating officer of Subaru of America, throws a wet blanket on any enthusiasm for a Legacy hybrid in the United States. On Monday, Doll said hybrids could improve Subaru’s brand image, but that he was happy with the carmaker’s current product line-up. “We’re going to need something at some point, even (only) to say we have it because that enhances our brand image in the market,” Doll told Reuters in an interview at the Detroit auto show yesterday.

Even higher gas prices apparently won’t change Doll’s mind. “If gas prices increase moderately and they stay in this $3 range, we have the products that can compete very, very well in the segments that we compete in,” he said. “Because remember, hybrids are only 2 percent of the market. And everybody has them out here (at the auto show) so it’ll be interesting to see how that all shakes out in the market.”

Check back here in one year, when Subaru announces plans for a future hybrid or electric car at next year’s Detroit auto show.

In May, Subaru announced its intentions to produce the first Subaru hybrid gas-electric vehicle by 2012. Speaking from the Tokyo Motor Show yesterday, Ikuo Mori, president of Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., maker of Subaru cars, reiterated the company’s hybrid plans, saying that a hybrid would help Subaru meet tougher US fuel economy rules.

He did not specify which model would get a hybrid drivetrain, but suggested it would be a smaller vehicle. Subaru is developing its own unique hybrid system, but will lean on Toyota, which owns 16.5 percent of Fuji Heavy, for assistance with the technology. “It’s impossible to simply transplant Toyota’s systems into a Subaru vehicle, so we will research how to match it with Subaru’s platforms,” Mori said, in an interview with Automotive News. Mori added that Subaru will introduce the hybrid in an existing model, rather than creating a dedicated hybrid-only vehicle.

Mori believes that it’s critical to maintain a Subaru’s “distinctive performance” and all-wheel drive with the upcoming hybrid. “We won’t introduce a people mover or a volume car just for the sake of having green technology,” he said. Mori expressed concern about the company’s ability to meet long-range emissions regulations with its current gasoline engines. “We need a hybrid system.”

If ever there was an automotive brand that embodied the spirit of hybrid cars—urban, progressive, outdoorsy, family-oriented—it would be Subaru. Furthermore, Toyota, the hybrid leader, owns 16 percent of Fuji Heavy Industries, the maker of Subaru cars. Yet, loyal Subaru owners continue to wait in vain for the Japanese company, whose name translates to “unite,” to delivers on its promise to go hybrid.

In May 2009, Subaru announced plans to introduce a gas-electric hybrid car by 2012—but provided no details. Readers of this website responded with enthusiasm.

Subaru continues to dip its toes—and retreat. A few years ago, the company unveiled the Subaru B5 TPH (for Turbo Parallel Hybrid) concept car—a sporty two-seat, all-wheel-drive grand tourer that blends elements of a coupe, sporty hatchback, and Outback sport-utility. The company has been testing its diminutive Subaru R1e all-electric two-seat city car in the US—and in August even managed to launch the R1e-derived Subaru Stella Plug-In in Japan. The tiny Stella employs a 9.2 kilowatt-hour, 346-volt lithium ion battery pack and 47-kilowatt motor to deliver a top speed of 60 mph and a driving range of about 50 miles. Unfortunately, the car sells for $48,000—minus Japanese government incentives of nearly $20,000. (Mitsubishi offers the all-electric i-MiEV at a similar price.) Subaru is producing merely 170 units of the Stella Plug-in, essentially a small test run.

In the current run up to the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show approaches, some hybrid fans harbored hope that Subaru would finally pull the wraps off a practical affordable Subaru model heading to a US showroom sometime soon. Instead, the company yesterday announced plans to present the four-seat Subaru Hybrid Tourer Concept, yet another hypothetical rad-cool vehicle with gull-wing doors, lithium ion batteries, and motor-generators in front and back to electrify the company’s signature all-wheel drive and direct fuel-injected Boxer engine.

The Subaru Hybrid Tourer Concept, like the company’s previous concepts and hybrid announcements, will whet the appetite of eco-conscious Subie fans. At the same time, it will leave many of them wondering if Subaru will ever deliver a super-efficient ultra-safe gas-electric hybrid.

In 2005, Subaru unveiled a sporty two-seat hybrid concept car, the Subaru B5 TPH Hybrid. Leveraging its relationship with Toyota, Subaru is now planning a production hybrid by 2012.

Subaru is the latest in a line of carmakers announcing plans to enter the hybrid market. Other major auto brands planning to introduce a first hybrid in the next few years include Audi, BMW, Hyundai, Mazda, Mercedes, Porsche and Volkswagen. The movement toward hybrids, the most fuel-efficient vehicles on the road, will be accelerated due to higher fuel-efficiency standards and tougher emissions rules recently enacted in the United States. Automakers must meet average efficiency standards of 35.5 miles per gallon by 2016, four years sooner than previous planned. Europe and Japan are also implementing tougher regulations.

“We will take advantage of our alliance with Toyota,” said Ikuo Mori, president and chief executive at Fuji Heavy, after a news conference launching the revamped Legacy model.
Mori did not specify which Subaru vehicle might get the hybrid treatment. Subaru’s brand qualities—outdoorsy yet urban and progressive—are well suited to hybrid buyers.

Auto sales in Japan and the United States have taken a dramatic slide this year—but hybrid gas-electric cars, such as the Honda Insight and Toyota Prius, have made a rebound in Japan in the past month or two. The Japanese government has introduced a number of incentives for hybrids and other fuel-efficient cars, which have apparently produced the positive results.

A future Subaru hybrid is not the company’s first foray into greener high-tech cars. A few years ago, the company unveiled the Subaru B5 TPH (for Turbo Parallel Hybrid) concept car—a sporty two-seat, all-wheel-drive grand tourer that blends elements of a coupe, sporty hatchback, and Outback sport-utility. Its turbocharged 2.0-liter boxer four is mated with a very thin electric motor-generator. Lithium ion batteries for the Subaru B5 TPH were co-developed by Fuji Heavy Industries and NEC Corp.

Subaru has also been testing its R1e, all-electric city car. The diminutive two-seater, about 20 inches longer than a Smart ForTwo, has a top speed of 65 miles per hour and a range of 50 miles. The real innovation of the R1e could be the car’s rapid recharging system also developed with NEC. The system promises a full recharge of the 346-volt lithium ion battery pack in about 15 minutes or less. Subaru has about 40 R1e electric cars in fleets in Japan, and has been evaluating two R1es in the United States, working in collaboration with the New York Power Authority.

The Achilles Heel of electric cars has been the limited range they can travel between charges. Compared with a gasoline engine, which can travel hundreds of miles on a tank, electric vehicles are often limited to 100 miles or less. Perhaps that drawback has been exaggerated—considering that American drivers usually drive less than 40 miles or so per day. But the matter gets worse when you compare the time it takes refuel a car with an internal combustion engine—about five minutes—and the ticks on the clock to recharge an electric car—several hours.

The Subaru R1e could help change that. The diminutive two-seater, about 20 inches longer than a Smart ForTwo, is anything but revolutionary during its time on the road—top speed of 65 miles per hour and a range of 50 miles. However, the time to recharge the 346-volt lithium ion battery pack has been reduced to about 15 minutes. NEC Corporation and Fuji Heavy Industries, the maker of Subaru vehicles, said that its new rapid recharge technologies has whittled that time down to about five to eight minutes—not far off from a visit to your neighborhood gas station.

Furthermore, the Subaru R1e fast-charge eliminates the typical battery issue of charging memory loss, allowing partial charges and quick charges that do not decrease battery life.

Here’s the hitch: To get the faster charging time, you need a special stationary charger. Using the onboard standard charger puts the electricity refueling time back to about eight hours.

Subaru has about 40 R1e electric cars in fleets in Japan, and plans to expand that number to 100 in the next year. The company has also begun evaluating two R1es in the United States, working in collaboration with the New York Power Authority, the agency that manages the power use in city departments.

Don’t expect an R1e to arrive anytime soon at your local Subaru dealership, but if the fast-charge technology continues to improve, one of the biggest obstacles to an electric car future will be eliminated, which could make visits to the gas station seem like a much bigger waste of time and resources.

When it comes to building cars, Subaru has always followed its own drummer. Aside from Porsche, it’s the only carmaker using horizontally opposed “boxer” engines—which lower the car’s center of gravity, neatly complementing their signature “symmetrical” all-wheel-drive system. From capacious if agricultural Outback station wagons to balls-to-the-wall screaming rally cars like the WRX, Subaru are often cult-like and deeply loyal to this offbeat manufacturer.

It stands to reason, then, that a Subaru hybrid would be slightly different. The Subaru B5 TPH (for Turbo Parallel Hybrid) concept, a sporty two-seat, all-wheel-drive grand tourer, blends elements of coupe, sporty hatchback, and Outback sport-utility. Its turbocharged 2.0-liter boxer four develops 191 kW (256 hp) and 253 foot-pounds of torque. The company’s engineers added a very thin—just 58 mm—electric motor-generator between engine and transmission. Though it produces just 10 kW (13 hp) at peak power, it pulls like a steam engine, generating 110 foot-pounds of torque from start-up.

This neatly offsets the characteristic “turbo lag” —in which turbochargers provide little power until they have spooled up to full operating speed. The hybrid also compensates for the characteristics of the Miller cycle engine (defined as the Atkinson cycle used in all hybrids plus forced induction from a turbo- or super-charger). What’s the Atkinson cycle? It’s a variation on the standard Otto cycle gasoline engine, in which valve timing simulates a cycle in which the piston moves through strokes of different lengths. This extracts more energy from the fuel because on the power stroke, the combusting air-fuel mixture can expand to a greater volume than it originally occupied on the intake stroke…but low-speed power is terrible, so the hybrid’s low-speed torque fits nicely.

Unlike full hybrids that can run on batteries alone, both power sources—engine and electric motor—operate full time. This let Subaru fit a much smaller and more compact motor, adding just 200 lbs (100 kg) of weight including the battery pack.

A crucial component of the B5-TPH is its manganese lithium ion batteries, co-developed by Fuji Heavy Industries (Subaru’s parent) and NEC Corp. With 50 percent greater power density than the Nickel-Metal-Hydride batteries in hybrids today, Li-ion batteries also offer much faster recharge. The weak spots of Li-ion batteries have traditionally been their life cycle, which varied with use cycles rather than time, and their heat generation. Subaru and NEC claim to have solved these problems, though the company has released very few details. Experimental numbers of the TPH powertrain will appear first during 2007 in versions of the Legacy sedan, in Japan only.
