The all-new Outlander will have an MSRP of ¥3,324,000 to ¥4,297,000 (approximately $38,440 to $49,693 at today’s exchange rates) which includes a consumption tax.

The Outlander PHEV qualifies for Japan’s “eco-car” tax incentives, and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry’s “subsidies for measures designed to promote introduction of clean energy vehicles” up to a maximum of ¥430,000 (approximately $5,000), making the actual cost to the customer as low as ¥2,894,000 ($33,471) according to Mitsubishi.

A fair amount of detail about the Outlander is already known, like the multi-mode drivetrain that allows it to operate as an electric vehicle, a series hybrid, or a parallel hybrid; and that its twin electric motors are used to operate the SUV in four-wheel drive.

Newer information from the company reveals that the high-capacity battery can serve as a 100-volt AC power supply capable of delivering up to 1,500 watts of electricity as an external power source. Additionally, Battery Charge Mode allows the battery to be charged by the engine either when stationary or on the move.

What remains yet unknown is when the Outlander PHEV will land in either the U.S. or Europe, and at what prices.

A useful factory option will be a quick-charge socket for charging when away from home, which the company says can charge the battery up to 80 percent in 30 minutes. Standard charge time at 200 volts is approximately four hours for a full charge.

Mitsubishi says that vehicles fitted with the optional charger may be eligible to receive an additional ¥30,000 ($347) discount as part of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry’s subsidies noted above.

According to Mitsu’s spec chart for the Outlander, in all-electric mode the Outlander has a range of 60 kilometers (37 miles). Fuel economy in hybrid mode is rated at 18.6 km per liter (km/l), with combined fuel economy at 67.0 km/l. These ranges are all based on the Japanese JC08 test cycle.

The Outlander PHEV will be available in five trim levels: the base G, the G Safety Package fitted with “e-Assist” (Japan-market name) advanced safety technology system; the G Navi Package, which comes with on-board navigation and other features, the G Premium Package, which features a Rockford Fosgate Premium Sound System and leather-upholstered seats, and the built-to-order E.

Mitsubishi says its e-Assist advanced safety technology package is available as standard equipment for trim levels of G Safety Package and up, for a difference of ¥95,000 ($1,100) over the base G.

Mitsubishi also said production of the built-to-order E model and models with additional factory options are scheduled to begin at the end of February 2013. The company also noted that it’s targeting sales of 4,000 units during its 2012 fiscal year.
