The first production model of the Infiniti Q50, the brand’s all-new premium sports sedan, rolled off the assembly line at the Tochigi production plant May 14.

The official off-line ceremony was presided over by Carlos Ghosn, president and CEO of Nissan Motor Co. Ltd., and Johan de Nysschen, President of Infiniti Motor Company Ltd.

The Q50 is the first in the new generation of Infiniti vehicles. The company said it sets fresh benchmarks in the areas of emotive styling, advanced technology and performance.

Premiered at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January, the Q50 is at the heart of Infiniti’s new model line-up. The Q50 will include a hybrid version.

“Thanks to the skill and constant focus on performance improvement, Tochigi has a global reputation for producing top-quality vehicles. Year after year, Tochigi sets the benchmark for manufacturing quality standards,” said Ghosn. “With the Q50, once again the Tochigi team has showcased their skill and expertise and proven the power of Japanese monozukuri.”

De Nysschen added that the Q50 was the opening salvo in Infiniti’s new product portfolio under the “Q” naming structure which was launched in December last year.

Three-time Formula One World Champion, Sebastian Vettel, played an active role in the testing and evaluation program of the Q50 in his capacity of Infiniti’s Director of Performance.

Vettel will assist in shaping the performance dynamics of Infiniti’s future model line-up.

The all-new Infiniti Q50, which will go on sale in the summer, is available with a V6 3.5-liter gas-electric hybrid powertrain and a gas 3.7-liter powertrain.

Yesterday Infiniti debuted its new 2014 QX60 Hybrid on the floor of the New York International Auto Show at Manhattan’s Jacob Javits Center.

The QX60 identifies within Infiniti’s new begins-with-a “Q” naming convention the SUV currently known as the JX35.

The new hybrid is projected by Infiniti to realize 26 miles per gallon fuel economy (combined city/highway driving) – a 24 percent increase over standard QX60 models and Infiniti expects it will have best 7-passenger fuel efficiency in the premium segment.

The Infiniti QX60 Hybrid, with its reduced emissions, enhanced fuel economy and extended driving range of more than 500 miles, is projected to be priced about $3,000 above the 3.5-liter V6 equipped models.

In place of the standard QX60′s 3.5-liter V6, the QX60 Hybrid utilizes a supercharged 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder and an electric motor powered by a compact Lithium-ion battery pack located under the 3rd row seat – maintaining a flat rear floor for easier passenger access to the rear seats and no impact to passenger or cargo room versus standard QX60 models.

For all intents and purposes, this system appears to be the same as the one found within the confines of the QX60 Hybrid cousin, the Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid, also unveiled in New York March 27.

Net system horsepower is estimated at 250 horsepower.

More information will be released closer to on-sale date.

Infiniti unveiled during the New York auto show prices for the G37 sedan replacement, the Q50.

The Q50 will be offered with a choice of a 3.7-liter V6 or 3.5-liter Infiniti Direct Response Hybrid system in rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

The base Q50 will start at $36,450 while the hybrid version will start at $43,700.

“From world’s first technologies to unmatched levels of connectivity and personalization, the 2014 Q50 sports sedan is a bold example of Infiniti’s future brand direction,” said Infiniti Americas Vice President Ben Poore.

According to Infiniti, two new world’s first production performance technologies make their debuts in the Q50 – Infiniti Direct Adaptive Steering technology and Active Lane Control.

The new steering system allows advanced control of the Q50’s steering effort and responsiveness, transmitting the driver’s intentions to the wheels faster than a mechanical system. Four different steering settings are offered, allowing customization by driver preference or road conditions.

The Active Lane Control uses a camera-based lane marker detection system to further enhance on-center driving capability and improve vehicle stability within the lane.

Infiniti announced today that a new gasoline electric hybrid model will join the 2014 Infiniti QX60 crossover lineup in the United States this summer.

Infiniti will hold the vehicle’s world debut at the upcoming New York International Auto Show held at the end of March.

With the addition of the new QX60 Hybrid to the Q70 Hybrid (currently available as the M Hybrid) and previously announced Q50 Hybrid, Infiniti will have a trio of Direct Response Hybrids for the 2014 model year.

The new Infiniti QX60 Hybrid is projected to realize 26 miles per gallon fuel economy (combined city/highway driving) – a 24 percent increase over non-hybrid QX60 models and Infiniti said it is projected to have best 7-passenger fuel efficiency in the segment.

According to company executives, it does so with absolutely no compromise of performance, interior roominess or cargo space compared to non-hybrid QX60 models.

The new Infiniti QX60 Hybrid is projected to be priced about $3,000 above the non-hybrid models.

Launched in early 2012 as the Infiniti JX35, the Infiniti QX60 is one of Infiniti’s best-selling models, second only to the current Infiniti G line.

The new QX60 Hybrid will be powered by a 2.5-liter supercharged engine and 15 kilowatt electric motor connected to a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). Net system horsepower is estimated at 250 horsepower.

Based on technology found in the Infiniti M35h Hybrid, the QX60 Hybrid’s Infiniti Direct Response Hybrid system uses a compact lithium-ion battery and electric motor to provide supplementary power through its one-motor/two-clutch system. The result is a delivery of power equivalent to the 3.5-liter V6 but with 4-cylinder fuel economy. A regenerative braking system partially recharges the battery during vehicle braking.

With the compact li-ion battery located under the third-row seat, the QX60 Hybrid maintains its flat rear floor for easier passenger access to the rear seats and no impact to cargo room.

The QX60 Hybrid will offer Infiniti’s range of available advanced technologies, such as Backup Collision Intervention (BCI) and Around View Monitor.

More information about the 2014 Infiniti QX60 Hybrid will be available following its official media unveiling on March 27.

Infiniti is launching the European version of the Q50 at the Geneva Motor Show both with a hybrid vesion and a diesel version.

The Infiniti Q50 is the first Infiniti Q car to take the Geneva spotlight. An all-new sedan for the premium D segment, the Q50 is on show in Geneva in 3.5 Hybrid form and also, enjoying its world premiere, as the Q50 2.2d.

The 2.2d is powered by a new 2.2-liter diesel engine.

The Infiniti Q50 is the first Infiniti to benefit from the brand’s collaboration agreement with Daimler AG. The 2.2-litre direct-injection four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine has been modified by the Infiniti engineering teams to ensure engine response is in line with Infiniti’s emphasis on performance.

It is the same engine used in certain C and E-class Mercedes.

The engine offers power and torque while retaining a low CO2 output, which positions the Q50 at the centre of the premium saloon market in Europe.

Infiniti’s first four-cylinder diesel engine provides 170 horsepower, 295 pound-feet of torque and low emissions starting from below 115g/km of CO2.

Both a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed automatic will be available with the diesel engine and have been tailored to Infiniti’s specific requirements.

Infiniti engineers spent time making sure then diesel engine feels different from its Mercedes version, with faster response in keeping with the sportier drive characteristics Infiniti requires. Although power is essentially the same, the manner in which these maxima are achieved is unique to Infiniti. This has been achieved not just by digital remapping but a considerable amount of re-engineering.

Unique Infiniti engine parts include air inlet, intercooler, low-pressure fuel system and after treatment system, oil pan, engine mounts, and engine control unit (ECU). Visible engine items are in addition unique to Infiniti. The engine block, turbocharger, exhaust and injection system are shared with the Mercedes-Benz version.

The second version of the Q50 for Europe is the Q50 3.5 Direct Response Hybrid.

Infiniti believes its accelerative ability will guarantee it a place in the top echelons of European high performance sports sedans.

With 0-100km/h (60 mph) estimated to be well under 5.5 seconds. it is likely even to outperform its big brother, the Infiniti M35h, which is currently listed in Guinness World Records as the world’s fastest accelerating hybrid car.

The 364 horsepower Q50 3.5 Hybrid shares the same dual-clutch Direct Response Hybrid system and 7-speed automatic transmission as the M35h, but with changes to improve performance, extend its electric-only range and allow for an outstanding cargo capacity for a hybrid in this class.

Infiniti estimates the Q50 hybrid fuel consumption on the combined cycle to be at 6.2 l/100km (45mpg) and CO2 emissions under 145g/km.

The Q50 3.5 Hybrid will be available in both rear and all-wheel drive forms in Europe.

The Q50’s styling with distinctive human eyes-like headlight and “Double Arch” grille is similar to what has been shown in North America.

Infiniti said the Q50’s world-first technologies such as Direct Adaptive Steering, and a digital environment are promising unprecedented levels of customization and distinguish Infiniti’s most European car yet.

Infiniti is showing a taste of the future in the form of the LE Concept. Infiniti’s first 100% electric car, the dramatically-styled LE Concept proclaims “dynamic luxury” far more than “electric vehicle”, something the production version – due in under two years’ time – will maintain. As an Infiniti, driving pleasure and performance will be uppermost.

Infiniti took the wraps off the all-new Infiniti Q50 luxury sports sedan at the Canadian International Auto Show (CIAS) in Toronto by featuring the hybrid version.

The global launch of this G37 successor had been held in Detroit earlier this year.

Being the first vehicle to bear Infiniti’s new nomenclature, Infiniti said the Q50 is also a showcase of the brand’s future design, performance and technology direction.

“The new nomenclature reflects Infiniti’s desire for clarity and cohesiveness, as we embark on ambitious growth plans, including significant expansion of our portfolio,” said Wendy Durward, Director of Infiniti Canada. “The all-new Q50 offers world’s first technologies intended to enhance driving experience, and sets the brand’s course for further advancements in design and performance.”

Two new world’s first production performance technologies make their debuts in the Q50 – Infiniti Direct Adaptive Steering technology and Active Lane Control.

The new steering system allows advanced control of the Q50’s tire angle and steering inputs, transmitting the driver’s intentions to the wheels faster than a mechanical system.

The Infiniti Q50 is available with a choice of a 328-horsepower 3.7-litre V6 or new Q50 Hybrid featuring Infiniti’s Direct Response Hybrid System with Intelligent Dual Clutch Control.

Both Q50 models are available in rear-wheel or Intelligent All-Wheel Drive.

“Infiniti continues to push the boundaries of design creativity in the premium segment and with the new Q50 we take another great leap in terms of proportion, Infiniti-ness and premium quality,” said Taro Ueda, Vice President, Nissan Design America (NDA). “The new design language comes mainly from the Infiniti Trilogy concept cars. A more dynamic, sporty appearance, an unmistakable character to the front end and an energetic profile are exterior highlights. Inside, hospitality and a seamless connection to information resonate.

If you believe performance, luxury and fuel economy is an oxymoron, then you haven’t driven Infiniti’s 2013 M35h. The h is for hybrid … and horsepower.

Performance? The 360 combined horsepower of the V6 engine and electric motor blasts the hybrid sports sedan from 0 to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds, and the quarter mile in a time of 13.9031 seconds – a Guinness Book of World Records.

Luxury? The interior is detailed, refined and awash in wood trim and high-grade leather with creature comforts befitting its luxury status.

Oh yeah, fuel economy? Considering its performance capabilities, the M35h has an astonishing EPA fuel economy rating of 27/32 mpg city/highway, with a combined rating of 29 mpg. That’s a huge leap beyond the gas-powered M37’s (the 2011 replacement for the M35) numbers of 18/26 and 21 combined.

The hybrid system, called “Infiniti Direct Response Hybrid,” was developed and engineered solely by Nissan, Infiniti’s parent company. This is the Japanese automaker’s first foray into a home-grown hybrid propulsion system and uses technologies developed for the Nissan Leaf electric vehicle, including the lithium-ion battery and electric motor. (Nissan’s first hybrid offering, the discontinued Altima Hybrid, was developed by licensing Toyota’s gas-electric technology.)

Nissan engineers designed the M Hybrid system to fit all of Infiniti’s rear-wheel-drive models, including the G sedan and coupe and the EX and FX crossovers. That suggests a strong hybrid path for the Infiniti luxury line.

If Nissan, the most ardent of electric car champions, is trumpeting the benefits of a gas-electric hybrid, it must say something about the enduring role that hybrids can play in improving the fuel efficiency of faster and more spacious cars that fuel up at the pumps instead of the plug. Its meaning to the green car movement shouldn’t be easily dismissed

Available in a single edition with three option packages, the 2013 Infiniti M35h has a base price starting at $54,200, a $500 increase over the outgoing model. For its sophomore year, the M Hybrid adds standard features including, auto-dimming sideview mirrors and auto-trunk cincher, and the addition of a rear sonar system to the Premium Package.

A “P2” Hybrid System

Infiniti’s hybrid system gives consumers another flavor of hybrid technology – to compete against full hybrids from Toyota/Lexus, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Ford and others. Bearing some resemblance to the two-mode hybrids from General Motors, the system design incorporates a single disc-shaped electric motor/generator, two clutches and a standard seven-speed automatic transmission with the torque converter removed. Called a parallel two-clutch system, hence the name P2, it is aimed at a blend of power and efficiency.

The “full-hybrid” architecture allows the M35h to operate on the electric motor only, the gasoline engine only, or a combination of the two depending on driving conditions and driver demands. It also saves gas by automatically shutting off the gas engine when the car is stopped. As in other hybrid vehicles, the motor doubles as both a propulsion unit and a generator that recovers energy otherwise lost during deceleration and braking.

The powertrain embodies the 3.5-liter V6 engine from the previous M35 and works with the single electric motor and two clutches. The engine uses the Atkinson-cycle valve timing that trades some power output loss for improved efficiency.

The twin overhead cam, 24-valve V6 is rated at 302 horsepower and 258 pounds-feet of torque at 5,000 rpm. The 346-volt motor generates 67-horsepower (50kw) at 2,000 rpm and 199 pounds-feet of torque. Combined output of the V6 and electric motor is 369 horsepower. Whether propelled by the engine, electric motor or both, the energy is directed to the rear wheels and controlled by the seven-speed automatic transmission.

The first of the two clutches is a dry clutch positioned between the engine and the AC motor, which is in-line with the front of the transmission. This eliminates the need for a torque converter and allows the full decoupling and shutting down the V6 nearly any time there is adequate battery energy to power the car by electricity alone. The second clutch is a wet clutch at the rear of the transmission that allows the engine to turn the motor/generator to charge the batteries with the vehicle stationary. It also smoothes the drivetrain during shifts and when the V6 is turned on and off.

In addition to manual shift capability for the transmission, the M Hybrid has four driving modes selected by a rotary knob – Snow, ECO, Normal and Sport. Snow is for, well, snowy roads. Eco provides the best fuel economy, but performance is unexciting. Response sharpens in Normal while Sport confirms that the M Hybrid is a sport sedan.

Completing the hybrid system is a 1.4-kilowatt lithium-ion battery pack positioned under the trunk’s floorboard. Like Nissan’s electric Leaf, the battery pack uses the company’s proprietary laminated-cell configuration that enhances battery cooling. Infiniti says the M35h can go 1.2 miles on electric power alone.

Most hybrid systems, including those built by Toyota/Lexus and Ford, are parallel systems, but use two motors and a planetary gearset. Since this type of system cannot decouple the engine and motor, efficiency is lower because of engine friction during electric drive conditions.

Infiniti isn’t the only carmaker to employ the P2 type of hybrid system, but its approach is different from the others. For example, Hyundai uses a separate belt-alternator-starter system, Volkswagen (Porsche and Audi) retains a conventional torque converter and BMW’s ActiveHybrid system does use a single-motor, 2-clutch, no-torque-converter system, but also (unlike Infiniti) adds a starter motor.

Lynne Says ….

Call me old fashioned, but I like chrome, and the M35h has just enough to please the eye. Infiniti’s stylists added it like a woman adds pearls to a black dress.

A premium car needs a strong face, and what a face. Infiniti’s signature double-arch, low-slung chrome grille sitting below a bulging hood conveys power when spied in a rearview mirror. Swept-back crystal-look Bi-Xenon headlights soften the grille’s impact.

Its balanced, rear-wheel drive proportions and stance, along with Infiniti’s trademark short front overhang and long hood leading back to a coupe-like slope, says the M Hybrid resides squarely in sport-sedan territory. Viewed from any angle, the styling is decidedly striking with muscular haunches punctuating its powerful stance.

The exterior’s curvaceous lines are reprised inside, most notably the design of the dual-cockpit dash and the swoops on the doors. The dash is a little too busy for my tastes, but control central is blessedly free of complication. Switchgear feels substantial and operates with a smooth deliberateness. The steering wheel tilts and telescopes and the serially adjustable leather seats are supportive in all the right places.

Like most manufacture-provided test drive vehicles, our M hybrid was equipped with all of the option packages: Technology, Deluxe Touring and Premium. Of all the added luxury and whiz-bang techno features – Intelligent Cruise Control, Distance Control, Active Trace Control – my favorite was the Blind Spot Warning, something every car of the future should include. When other cars are in the lanes adjacent to the M35h, lights in the A pillars appear and will flash, accompanied with an audio alert, if the turn signal is activated.

But there’s more. If a vehicle is in a blind spot and you begin a move towards its lane, the Blind Spot Intervention system automatically applies brakes on the opposite side of the car, prompting you to move back to the center of the lane.

I extend a mea culpa to Infiniti for questioning their claim that the M35h “is able to drive in electric only mode for as much as 50 percent of the time.” We selected Eco mode for the first three days of driving, tallied 113 miles of mostly in-town driving and, Wow!, the EV trip odometer recorded 55.4 miles – 49.1 percent solely on electric power.

In town, the hybrid system is an absolute paragon of smoothness, so much so that it is nearly impossible to feel the transition from electric power to engine power and vice versa. It surges impressively under full throttle, even in Eco mode, and delivers more than sufficient power to merge and pass, even with a full load of passengers.

On the highway, the car rides with supple smoothness. It’s neither BMW harsh or Lexus soft-edged comfort, and effectively soaks up bumps, expansion joints and other road irregularities.

The M35h melds equal measure of power, sport, luxury, technology and exceptional fuel economy – features I think place it on top of the luxury hybrid heap.

Larry Says ….

On a stunning fall Saturday morning, we drove south on I-5 from Olympia, Wash., and then headed east for some small town antique shopping. Mostly farmland, the two-lane blacktop roads were nearly deserted and lined with fields of yellow cornstalks, with occasional clumps of maples showing touches of autumn color.

The first 60 or so miles were near arrow straight with a few sweeping curves thrown in. During aggressive driving in the Sport mode, the M Hybrid hunkered down with the agility and enthusiasm of your favorite pooch on a dead run behind a terrified squirrel. The performance wasn’t a surprise, but lifting off the throttle was – the tach needle dropped to zero rpm, indicating that the car was running on electrons while in the Sport mode at speeds of 70-plus mph.

After finding a few “treasures” in a delightful small store, we altered our plans and drove northeast toward the foothills of the Cascade Mountains. The road quickly narrowed and ahead was several miles of tight, sweeping and off-camber corners with a discernible climb in elevation. The chassis answered each curve, each load shift and lateral thrust that was encountered. The rapid, upward climb brought out the car’s balance and the excellent match of chassis and powertrain. Understeer was faint, and there was enough power on hand to induce some throttle-on oversteer.

Slight body roll showed up during some cornering, but not once did I have to wrestle with the car. Infiniti’s electro-hydraulic steering was accurate, responsive and certain on center. Brakes had a natural feel rather than the pulsing, almost wooden feel of most hybrid regenerative brake systems.

We, reluctantly, said good-bye to the M Hybrid a couple days later after driving 283 miles, 121 of which were on battery power – an impressive 41 percent considering how hard the car was driven. Equally impressive was the gas engine’s fuel economy of 29.6 mpg, a tad better than the EPA’s 29 mpg combined rating.

The M35h is the antidote to the everyday mundane and joyless driving hybrids that poke along the streets and highways. Yes, it’s an expensive alternative, but with this hybrid, performance, luxury and fuel economy is not an oxymoron.

The Luxo Hybrid For You?

More stringent government regulations – lower emissions in Europe, higher fuel economy in the U.S. – are forcing automakers to turn to gasoline-electric hybrids as one of the solutions to meet the new rules. This includes cars in the luxury segment, which is beginning to fill up with powerful six-cylinder hybrid sedans, such as the BMW Active Hybrid 5, Lexus GS 450h, Porsche Panamera S Hybrid, Mercedes S400 Hybrid plus, the upcoming Audi A6 Hybrid and Acura RLX Hybrid.

The M Hybrid’s closest competitor is the Lexus GS 450h. All new for 2013, the Lexus sport sedan hybrid bests the Infiniti’s fuel economy with an EPA rating of 29 city/34 highway and 31 mpg combined. But sipping a little less fuel comes with a cost. Priced starting at $58,950, the GS 450h is nearly $7,000 more than the M35h. For the extra money you also get a car that isn’t as quick, is less engaging to drive and has a continuously variable transmission that feels like a rubber band when it accelerates.

Power is part of Infiniti’s persona, and putting muscle in the M35h doesn’t undermine the raison d’etre of gas-electric technology: saving fuel.

Infiniti M35 Hybrid Price As Tested
Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Base Price $54,200

Technology Package $3,050

Deluxe Touring Package $3,900

Premium Package $4,200

Destination Charges $895

Total $66,245

Infiniti launched today in Beijing a long wheelbase version of its M sedan, and included the launch of the hybrid version of the M, the M35hL.

The elongated chassis features a 5.9-inch (150mm) longer wheelbase than the standard Infiniti M. Most of this extra space is dedicated to the rear seat legroom.

At the heart of the M35hL is the new 3.5-liter VQ35HEV engine, the only hybrid engine recently listed among the “Top 10 Ward’s Best Engines” by Ward’s Auto.

The engine provides a maximum power output of 360 horsepower (at 6800 rpm) and maximum torque of 258 pound-feet (at 5200 rpm), while a motor with two clutches drawing power from a lithium battery pack in the trunk area adds another 50 kw and 199 pound-feet of torque. The hybrid system is able to achieve the same level of acceleration with 30 percent less fuel consumption compared to the company’s conventional VQ37 engine.

The electronically controlled 7-speed automatic transmission with a drive-adaptive learning algorithm sense plays an important role in further improving driving performance. It is also equipped with manual shift mode, Adaptive Shift Control (ASC), and Downshift Rev Matching, which provides faster, smoother downshifts by raising engine rpm slightly. A unique Eco Pedal System also improves fuel efficiency by 5 percent. The system counteracts in advance with a pedal feedback control mechanism through a tactile indicator. At the same time, the driver can constantly monitor the level of fuel-efficient driving which is indicated by the color and flashing of a lamp on a dash meter.

Infiniti launched the LE Concept at the 2012 New York International Auto Show, a car offering strong hints as to what Infiniti’s future electric vehicle will look and feel like.

While showcasing stunning looks, the Infiniti LE Concept is more grounded in reality than is usually the case with Infiniti’s concepts. And, it is more than a rebadged and styled Nissan Leaf, though lessons learned, and some powertrain components are believed to have been re-translated in this “Luxury Electric,” as Infiniti calls it.

A production version is expected to reach Infiniti showrooms in near-similar form within the next two years as Infiniti’s first zero-emission luxury sedan.

In the words of Infiniti, “the LE Concept has been designed as a pure Infiniti, rather than as an electric vehicle with luxury appointments. The vehicle is also substantial in form – about the same overall length as an Infiniti G Sedan.”

<img src="http://www.hybridcars.com/files/InfinitiLEElectricconcept.jpg"InfinitiLEElectricconcept" title="InfinitiLEElectricconcept" />

Numerous design features contribute to the slippery coefficient of drag of 0.25, which aids driving range, including the aluminum-alloy wheels with aero treatment, the high rear deck, rear aero diffuser and aero side fin spoilers with integrated illumination.

Infiniti LED headlights and taillights echo the design direction of Infiniti’s new and future products.

The engineers in charge of the LE Concept’s e-powertrain sought a silent, smooth response for both accelerating from a start and re-accelerating, such as merging onto freeways or changing lanes. All we actually know about the electric motor chosen is that is produces 134 horsepower, 240 pound-feet of torque. The Infiniti LE Concept’s battery system is a proven laminated 24 kwh lithium-ion (li-ion) design with a ChaDeMo DC50kW quick charger.

<img src="http://www.hybridcars.com/files/LEInfinitiInterior.jpg"LEInfinitiInterior" title="LEInfinitiInterior" />

In terms of charging, the Infiniti LE Concept is equipped to utilize an integrated charging port, a DC Fast Charge option and an advanced Wireless Charging System.

No other technical information has been made available yet, nor do we know what the range might be.
