The all-new 2014 Impala, Chevrolet’s flagship sedan, began rolling off the production line at the Oshawa Assembly plant today.

The 2014 Impala has several new features, including the company’s light electrification technology named eAssist; and Adaptive Cruise Control and crash-avoidance technologies like Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Side Blind Zone Alert.

Three direct-injection engine choices will be available: a 3.6L V6, a newly designed 2.5L four-cylinder and a 2.4L four-cylinder with fuel-saving eAssist technology estimated to deliver up to 35 mpg on highway driving.

All engines are matched to a six-speed automatic transmission.

Chevrolet said the new generation Impala will begin arriving in showrooms this month.

“The all-new Impala demonstrates the new direction of Chevrolet,” said Kevin Williams, president and managing director of GM Canada. “Our employees in Oshawa have executed a flawless plan in bringing this iconic nameplate to life. The newly redesigned Impala will exceed customers’ expectations because of the hard work of our employees at Oshawa Assembly.”

The 2014 Impala will also be manufactured at General Motors’ Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant, starting in May.

Chevrolet’s latest MyLink radio debuts in the 2014 Impala. According to the company, the in-vehicle entertainment system includes a customizable eight-inch color display screen. The system also adopts natural voice recognition – a first for Chevrolet.

Ten standard airbags are included – GM said this is among the most in the segment.

The 2014 Chevrolet Impala is built at Oshawa’s flexible manufacturing line along with the Chevrolet Camaro, Buick Regal and Cadillac XTS.

Pricing will start at $27,535, including destination.

An updated version of Chevrolet’s full-size sedan is being revealed today during the New York auto show.

The 10th generation of the Impala will go on sale early 2013 as a 2014 model, and this will be the first to offer a mild hybrid powertrain system in the shape of what GM calls eAssist.

The Impala was America’s best-selling full-size sedan in 2011, with sales of more than 171,000, which also made it one of the 10 best-selling cars overall in the United States.

As for the eAssist version, the direct-injection Ecotec 2.4L engine works with the system to provide electrical assist in certain conditions to help save fuel. It is estimated at 182 horsepower and is expected to achieve at least 35 mpg on the highway on regular fuel.

A range of two other direct-injected engines will also be offered, including the current 3.6-liter V6 and a new 2.5-liter four-cylinder. All engines will be matched to six-speed automatic transmissions.

The new Impala will be loaded on the passive safety front with 10 standard air bags and OnStar, along with other available features. These will include full-speed-range adaptive cruise control, collision mitigation braking, forward collision alert, lane departure warning, side blind zone alert, rear cross traffic alert, rear camera and rear-park assist.

A MacPherson-strut front suspension and four-link rear suspension underpin the Impala, which soldiers on in front-wheel-drive form. An isolated front cradle and hydraulic ride bushing help deliver a smoother, quieter ride. All models feature an electric variable-assist steering system that helps save fuel by drawing energy only when the steering wheel is turned.

The revised Impala will be built both at GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck, Mich., and Oshawa, Ontario facilities. Prices have yet to be announced.

The Chevrolet Impala is one of America’s best-selling family sedans. After close to 50 years on the U.S. highways and byways, this car continues to improve with every generation. And on all fronts: inside, outside, and under the hood.

For 2008, Chevy has made a solid commitment to the Impala’s flex-fuel capabilities. Unlike other E85 offerings, the Impala is ethanol-compatible at virtually all trim-levels and engine types. This means the LS, LT, and LTZ models are all flex-fuel. Also, this year, the larger 3.9-liter V6 joins the base 3.5-liter V6 as a flex-fuel engine offering. Only the SS model of the Impala strictly runs on straight gasoline. For advocates of E85, the Impala is one of the front-running flagships in the alternative fuel brigade.

The Impala earns big points for its powerful and efficient engines, an available six-passenger seating configuration, and solid crash testing scores. All of these make it a strong contender for family car of the year. The suspension is a little soft, which results in an overall comfortable ride for passengers, but somewhat compromises handling dynamics behind the wheel. The two things that really hurt this vehicle’s appeal are its cheap, low quality cabin materials, and a noticeable shortage of legroom in both rows.
