Boulder County. Colo., is proving itself progressively minded, but perhaps in a less controversial way than the voter-approved state measure last year that legalized a certain recreational herb.

Boulder’s recently added county coded may not grab national headlines, but the mandate that new home construction must include wiring for electric vehicle charging, and solar panels, is otherwise progressive as far as building codes go.

The law went into effect on January 2 – which applies to unincorporated areas of the county – made Boulder one of a small number of areas in the country to adopt such forward thinking for alternative fuels vehicles according to Colorado Energy News.

New homes, duplexes, and townhouses must come with either 240-volt electric vehicle charging units or the wiring or conduit needed for easy installation of the charging units later on writes the publication.

“It’s a good example of leadership on the part of the community,” said Mike Salisbury, Transportation Program Associate at the Southwest Energy Efficiency Project and an advocate to the County for the amendment.
