Nissan today announced its all-electric Leaf has smashed a global sales milestone with 50,000 units sold.

This makes the car the best-selling electric vehicle of all time, said Nissan.

To drive the point home, Nissan said cumulative miles traveled – according to the Carwings telemetry system, for those cars that have it – is “greater than the distance from the earth to the sun,” or 161,556,509 miles (260 km).

One Leaf in Japan has also itself covered over 109,000 miles (175,000 km) – a respectable accomplishment for a car that’s been available for less than a couple years.

Nissan also noted 7,000 Leafs are being driven in 17 European countries, with one in Spain known to have racked up over 26,718 miles (43,000 km), in a relatively short span of time.

Meanwhile the word is spreading, charging infrastructure is being proliferated day by day, including ultra quick CHAdeMO DC fast chargers.

There are now 601 of these – up from 158 just 12 months ago, and installation of many more is in the works.
