Student Car Share Launching Close To 16 Canadian Universities

Rolling onto campus in time for the start of the 2013-14 school year, Student Car Share will be launching at 16 university and college campuses across Ontario and one in Quebec in September.

Student Car Share (SCS) describes itself as the first car sharing service in Canada geared towards the transportation needs of students 18 years old and over.

Membership perks include gas, insurance, maintenance, and 24/7 roadside assistance with each reservation.

While other car sharing programs often require a minimum age of 21 to reserve a car, SCS has an 18+ reservation policy. Thus, SCS said it is introducing a new generation to the personal, financial and environmental benefits of a car sharing lifestyle.

“We have a tremendous opportunity with students through Student Car Share to impart a sense of social responsibility and pride of ownership without the expense,” said Michael Lende, Founder of Student Car Share. “Alongside our trusted partners, we look forward to establishing a dynamic and united car sharing community across all Canadian university and college towns.”

In an exclusive partnership with Kia Canada and Discount Car and Truck Rentals, Student Car Share will offer members 24-hour access to a network of Kia vehicles, including the Kia Soul Urban Utility vehicle (UUV) hatchback and the Kia Rio sub-compact sedan.

“We’re proud to be Student Car Share’s exclusive vehicle provider,” said Robert Staffieri, Director of Marketing, Kia Canada Inc. “We are looking forward to offering students a convenient, flexible and cost-effective way to meet their transportation needs.”

Vehicle reservations can be conveniently made via desktop at www.StudentCarShare.ca, mobile device, or by calling SCS’ toll-free reservation line at 1.855.872.6393.

Members can plan their trip up to six months or in as little as 15 minutes in advance. All SCS vehicles are parked at designated SCS parking lots (identified by its signature reserved parking signs) on and/or near campus where students live and can be unlocked by members at the time of their reservation by using their SCS Smart Card.

Car keys are then found – and remain  – inside the vehicle. Simply turn the ignition on and hit the open road!

An SCS membership costs $50 a year, with a non-refundable $25 application fee and rates start at $8 per hour or $56 per day, including gas and insurance.

To celebrate its launch, SCS is offering a $50 membership with $50 driving credit as a back-to-school special.

“We are thrilled to be powering the Student Car Share fleet,” said Jay Singer, President and CEO, Discount Car and Truck Rentals. “As Canada’s only national Canadian owned car and truck rental company, it is our privilege to be a partner with Student Car Share in this innovative program.”

With future plans to expand throughout the country, Student Car Share said it will begin its roll-out in 2013-14 at Algonquin College, Bishop’s University, Carleton University, Conestoga College, Durham College, Fanshawe College, Fleming College, University of Guelph, Wilfrid Laurier University, McMaster University, University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT), Queen’s University, Trent University, University of Ottawa, University of Waterloo, University of Western Ontario and the University of Windsor.
