SKYACTIV Technologies To Power Next Mazda6

Mazda will celebrate the world premiere of its all-new Mazda6 sedan during the Moscow Motor Show on Wednesday August 29.

The new Mazda6 sedan is the second model in Mazda’s “new generation” of products which incorporate both the full range of SKYACTIV technologies and the new KODO “Soul of Motion” design language. It will also be the first Mazda equipped with the company’s new brake energy regeneration, i-ELOOP.

The introduction of i-ELOOP marks stage two of Mazda’s Building Block Strategy for environmental technology development. According to Mazda, the strategy calls for the completion of thorough and far-reaching improvements in traditional automotive technologies, before moving to the step-by-step introduction of electric devices to further improve vehicle fuel economy and reduce carbon emissions.

New Mazda6 will stand as the flagship model for a new generation of Mazda products. Mazda declared the new Mazda6 features a sense of dignity, style, luxury feel and comfort expected from a vehicle in the CD segment, while offering the pleasure of responsive and agile driving, which is at the core of the Mazda brand.

The model to be exhibited in Moscow is a Russian-specification sedan equipped with a direct-injection SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter gasoline engine and six-speed SKYACTIV-Drive automatic transmission.

No word yet as to the fuel consumption or range of this new generation.

What do they do with the energy from the i-ELOOP?
It appears the energy is used to run the radio and other electronics in the car, but not to move the car. This car is not even a micro hybrid.

Sure, every bit helps, but maybe, Mazda should add an electric traction motor to help move the car and at the same time, deliver even better fuel economy. With unstable fuel prices, 10% fuel economy improvement is not enough in today’s world.

I want to read that the new SKYACTIV is going into the Mazda5!

Although they’re pretty late in the game, it’s nice to see Mazda taking baby steps. I’d rather see them get it right the first time than end up like Nissan. Starting out slowly might benefit them in the end. At the end, they’ll have solid research behind a new electric hybrid technology AND an incredibly efficient, incredibly “green” conventional engine. They may be able to eventually out-Volt the Volt!

@Perfectapproach: With a name like yours, I’m not surprised of your approach 🙂

It is a bit of a balancing act when bringing something to market.
Do you perfect it and bring it to market later or do you bring it to market early and perfect it as you go?

I’d take a 3rd approach which is have real world user trials (where there is no financial risk to the users trialing it) and have users like me trial it. Users who give real feedback and push things to the limit and record the results. Users who do a lot of mileage in various conditions and who are interested in the technology and willing to go through teething issues and work with the engineers to perfect it.

There have been a number of teaser videos and pictures of the Mazda 6 released by Mazda, stirring up demand before it hits the show floor. Price and availability dates aren’t known yet, but if the pictures are any indication, it should be breathtaking to look at. Since it’s a Mazda, it will also be very affordable.

If there are folks selected to do any real world testing, include me. I have a short commute in four season weather with weekly drives up to the snow (10000+ foot altitudes from Oct to May)
