September 2015 Dashboard

The HybridCars.com monthly sales Dashboard is a collaboration of HybridCars.com and Baum & Associates, a Michigan-based market research firm focusing on automotive issues including the hybrid and electric vehicle market.

Overall sales for September continued at an extremely high level, albeit down from August 2015 (a normal seasonal trend), but up significantly from September 2014.

One of the reasons for the increase is due to the calendar, namely Labor Day last year (September 1) was counted in August sales, while this year its later date (September 7) means that it was obviously counted in September.

Overall sales in recent months have been strong, with increasing truck sales significantly offsetting a decline in car sales. Hybrids and diesels were down from previous months, while full electrics were up with plug ins in line.

Sales for full electric vehicles were up significantly from August of this year and September 2014. The share of the market for the month matched June with both months at the highest share for the year. The Model S paced the category. Of course, Model S sales are estimated and sales in the last month of the quarter tend to be higher. Six copies of the new Model X have been “sold” and were delivered this week in a launch ceremony on September 29. The Leaf had very strong sales in September 2014 (almost 2,900), while sales were only 1,247 this September. Since April, production of the Leaf has been at modest levels in anticipation of the updated Model Year 2016 product which is not yet available. Sales of the BMW i3 reached an all-time high of 1710, roughly double the average result. The e-Golf had a good month registering its third best result since it was introduced.

Plug in hybrids had a poor month, with most vehicles selling well below August of this year and September 2014. Inventory of the Prius Plug In continues to decline as production will not resume for a year, resulting of course in modest sales. The Volt had another poor month as current model year inventory was sold off. New vehicles (a significant update is now available) have finally been released from a quality hold, but until next Spring the vehicle will only be available in a limited number of states, which will restrain sales somewhat for the next several months. Ford’s two Energi products, the Fusion and the C-Max, have been quite consistent in sales volume over the last several months.

The hybrid category did not perform well in September. Volumes of the Prius were down across the entire “family” relative to August, but they were up relative to September 2014. For the category as a whole, sales were up vs. September 2014, albeit far less than the overall market resulting in reduced share. The new Prius Liftback is not yet available and volumes will improve as it is released. For the year, hybrids are down by 17 percent, which as noted previously is related to the Prius since its sales are so critical to the category.

Diesel sales year-to-date were down 2.3 percent , but results last month were down dramatically. The leading player in the category is the Ram Pickup Diesel and volumes of both the Ram Pickup itself and the diesel variant were down (the latter due to availability). But of course the impact of the emissions scandal at Volkswagen was reflected in the results and we expect this will continue and in fact become a larger factor at least until some clarity on future strategy and remediation is clear. A stop sale order for many of the VW and Audi products was issued September 19. Since sales are weighted (across the board) toward the end of the month, this had a huge impact on sales. As compared to August, sales of the Golf, Passat, and Jetta were down approximately 60 percent and down a similar amount from September 2014.
