September 2013 Dashboard

The HybridCars.com monthly sales dashboard is a collaboration of HybridCars.com and Baum & Associates, a Michigan-based market research firm focusing on automotive issues including the hybrid and electric vehicle market.

Sales for the month of September witnessed a down month for hybrids, with their share of the total market reduced from last month (2.95 percent vs. 3.54 percent), albeit even in share with September 2012.

The various versions of the Prius hybrid were down about 40 percent from last month and down 15 percent as compared to last September. Volumes on the Camry hybrid attained similar results.

Plug-in vehicle share remains at high levels, with September only trailing the August figure.

However, the extended-range Chevrolet Volt dropped significantly as compared to August.

The problems with the Volt include confusion in pricing between the 2013 and 2014 models, particularly with respect to lease pricing, and limited production as the Detroit-Hamtramck plant was adding the 2014 Impala and the transition to the modified version of the 2014 Malibu (as compared to the 2013 Malibu).

The Nissan Leaf is also experiencing production issues, specifically the availability of electrode material that will allow for greater volume. Nissan states that it should be able to expand production by November.

Tesla volumes are down from prior months because some of its production is now headed to Europe.

In contrast, Ford C-Max Energi and Fusion Energi (plug in hybrids) both had best-ever months.

Clean diesels have been running steady over the last several months, and reached 1.1 percent in September.

The BMW 5-Series Diesel is new this month. This is the first month with Infiniti Q50 hybrid with data, although there was a line in the chart last month with 0 sales.
