Performance vehicle manufacturer Saleen Automotive, Inc. announced it is partnering with the Art Center College of Design on a revolutionary concept for an electric vehicle.
Saleen Automotive, Inc. describes itself as an American specialty manufacturer of high performance vehicles, technical performance parts, lifestyle accessories and apparel. Saleen is mostly known for its performance cars based on V8-powered Ford Mustangs.
“Our electric car project is a critical component in Saleen Automotive’s future,” stated Steve Saleen, CEO, Saleen Automotive. “Since I conceived my electric car model, I’ve known that I wanted to work with Art Center and its collective talent. I’m not prepared to divulge much about our project yet, but the work we’ve done so far has been compelling. I credit much of that to our colleagues at the college and other talented Art Center alumni at Saleen.”
The Art Center College is located in Pasadena, California and has been responsible for many top automotive designers globally. Over the years, The Art Center has produced or generated such progressive automotive designers as J. Mays, Vice President of Ford Design, Ken Okuyama, Chief Designer of Pininfarina, Chris Bangle, Vice President of Design for BMW and Frank Stephenson, Design Director of McLaren and Shiro Nakamura, Design Head for Nissan to name a few.
“Working with Steve Saleen is a tremendous opportunity for our students and faculty,” said Stewart Reed, Transportation Design Chair. “Not only are we intent on bringing forward advanced design concepts worthy of the Saleen name and our college’s reputation for excellence but we are most pleased to be crafting for electric vehicles that could fundamentally change the world around us. Art Center’s core ethos aspires to encourage its students to create meaningful work.”
Saleen did not mention if this collaboration is for the Tesla-based Saleen Tesla Model S announced January 30.
At the time of the January 30 announcement, Saleen said renderings will be released as Research and Design continue and engineers will also prepare a spec sheet which will detail some of the enhancements and innovations the company intend to add to the Saleen Tesla Model S.
“Saleen Automotive is intent on continually expanding its presence in the automotive market,” stated Steve Saleen. “We have already announced or produced incredible vehicles including Camaros, Challengers, and of course Mustangs, adding style and performance to each of those legendary lines. Now, we turn our attention to the vehicle that has defined the sports car in the rapidly growing electric car sector. Tesla’s values are not a departure from our core values of elite power, style, and performance. I have admired their craftsmanship. And now with our upcoming entry into the electric car market with a revolutionary design all our own, we share a desire to also produce vehicles that are not dependent on fossil fuels and which accomplish this fuel independence with a tremendous assemblage of grace and technology.”
