It’s still a way off, but news making the rounds is that the 2013 Fisker Surf will debut as a production ready model at this year’s Paris Auto Show.
Not to be confused with the Geneva Motor Show just days away in March, the Paris event happens in September and it’s there that the ready to buy six-figure shooting brake Karma variant will be revealed.
Actually a near-ready concept version of the extended-range electric vehicle capable of delivering all the Karma’s 981 pound-feet of torque debuted last September at Frankfurt.
Briefly, its high torque figure comes when relying on full output from the combined gasoline and electric powertrain to motivate the over 5,000 pound car.
Its generator is a 260-horsepower, 2.0-liter GM Ecotec turbo engine not known to be spec’d in any other production car, and this is mated to two electric motors powered by a 20 kWh li-ion battery.
Unlike the pending 2013 Ninas to be made in Wilmington, Del., this Fisker will be made alongside the Karma at the Finnish Valmet plant. This should keep down production costs, but it is still believed it will be priced somewhat more than the Karma.
“[The Surf] is really a kind of merger of a sports car with a station wagon,” said Fisker to the media just before Frankfurt. “The inspirations for me – in growing up – were cars like the Jensen Interceptor and the Lamborghini Espada. They were super-cool sports cars that you could actually imagine living with and fitting a little bit of luggage and some people into.”
Henrik Fisker – who today announced he is stepping down as CEO, and stepping up as world-roving executive chairman – has designed vehicles for BMW and Aston Martin.
His new high-line wagon is more spacious inside than the Karma, and features the same earth-friendly accoutrements one would expect from a green car vying to earn a rightful place among such brands.
So if a new interpretation of European swankness is your cup of tea, this car could be the one for you. Being in something of a niche, it has scant actual competition, and more often is compared to the much higher priced Ferrari FF which has plowed the ground ahead of time for this market segment.
Although some green car fans decry such fairly high-end chic creations done in the name of environmental friendliness, this car is theoretically a screaming deal for the otherwise buyer of vehicles by the likes of Ferrari, Aston Martin, Lamborghini, Bentley, etc.
We understand why environmentalists and others are bothered, but to be fair to Fisker – and Tesla for that matter – its business model as a new America start-up seeks to establish major credibility by showing it can design cars cool enough that Leonardo DiCaprio will want to be among the first to own one.
In 2013, and later into this decade, the plan is to ease down market with more affordable cars, while increasing production volume and retaining environmentally sound designs. At this juncture, Fisker is still working on its first wave of sensational machines, of which the Surf, and likely also a cabriolet version of the Karma will be a part.
