October 2016 Dashboard

The HybridCars.com monthly sales Dashboard is a collaboration of HybridCars.com and Baum & Associates, a Michigan-based market research firm focusing on automotive issues including the hybrid and electric vehicle market.

Overall passenger vehicle sales for October were down 6 percent from a strong year-ago result and down 5 percent from September 2016.

Through the first 10 months of the year, total sales are now down slightly from last year and we expect sales for the entire year will also fall modestly short of last year. That said, overall sales continue to be extremely strong. As compared to a year ago, October sales were up for full electrics, plug-in hybrids, and diesels (October 2015 was the first month where diesel sales plunged due to the VW scandal.)
Hybrid sales in October were down from year ago. As compared to September, October sales were down in all categories except diesel where they were flat.

Battery electric vehicle sales were down significantly this month based upon a dramatic decline in Tesla sales.

Note: Tesla sales for a small number of months have been restated based upon new information from the company. Tesla does not usually release sales results for only the U.S. but did so at the end of the third quarter.

Tesla sales were down this month based on at least two factors: 1) Sales were brought forward (in September) to allow for strong third quarter results and 2) Production (and therefore sales) was down as Tesla modified its production to enable new hardware for semi-automated driving as it switched suppliers. Sales in November and December are likely to increase dramatically, as Tesla works to have another strong quarter and meet its aggressive yearly goals. As a share of total sales, battery electrics were at their lowest level since May – due primarily to lower Tesla sales.

Plug-in hybrids were down from last month, but strongly ahead of year-ago levels on the strength of the Chevy Volt and Ford Fusion Energi. Year-to-date, those two models are well ahead of 2015 levels. The Volt continued to sell at or over 2,000 units monthly, a level it has achieved since March. The Fusion had another good month. Additional models are forthcoming, particularly from the luxury makes. As a share of total sales, the result for October is ahead of the year-to-date level indicating that sales are growing as the year continues.

Hybrid sales in October were down from September and year-ago. The Prius Liftback had a terrible month, with sales at the lowest level since June 2011. While the Prius is selling poorly in the U.S., sales in Japan are strong and Toyota is shifting availability to meet demand. The Prius v and Prius v had sales very much in line with recent months. The RAV4 hybrid continues to sell well and is the second best- selling hybrid (behind the Prius Liftback). Volumes on the Accord Hybrid are increasing as the updated model (now produced in Japan) becomes more available. Volumes on the Civic hybrid had a very strong month as well, again based on a product launch as the hybrid becomes more available following the launch of the base model from a year ago.

While formal approval of the deal relating to 2.0-liter diesel engines was finalized in October between the EPA, California, and Volkswagen, their products remain off the market and there is no expectation that will change soon. Of course, this means that trucks are carrying the freight in diesel vehicles, namely the Ram, Transit, Colorado, and Canyon. Excluding the VW products, diesel sales so far this year are up 8.0 percent, running well ahead of the overall market.
