October 2014 Dashboard

The HybridCars.com monthly sales dashboard is a collaboration of HybridCars.com and Baum & Associates, a Michigan-based market research firm focusing on automotive issues including the hybrid and electric vehicle market.

The plug-in hybrid market experienced a very strong month, while the battery electric market declined somewhat relative to the overall passenger vehicle market. Hybrid and diesel vehicles continued the trend of recent months, trailing the overall market.

Plug-in hybrid vehicles as a share of the total market were at 0.29 percent which trails recent months (although this was higher than September 2014) and that of the year as a whole. While the Volt was up from last month (modestly), the vehicle remains at lower levels than last year (as well as year-to-date). The Hamtramck plant that produces the product has been down for the last two months. Both the BMW i8 and Cadillac ELR had strong months, although their volumes are modest. The Prius Plug-in has grown in volume this year, while the Ford entries (Fusion and C-Max Energi) are both doing well year-to-date 2014 vs. 2013.

SEE ALSO: September 2014 Dashboard

Battery electric vehicles had a better month than plug ins, based on the strength of the category leaders, namely the Nissan Leaf, Tesla Model S, and now the BMW i3. Of course, Model S volumes are estimated and continue to be below year-ago levels since production is now being shipped to European and Asian markets as well as the U.S. and Canada. The VW e-Golf debuted with the sale of a single vehicle! Battery electric vehicle share declined very modestly from the all-time highs reached in recent months, with a share of 0.46 percent.

Hybrid vehicles volumes continued to trail the overall market trend, as compared to September 2014, October 2013 and year-to-date. Hybrid volumes trailed volumes of recent months, with volumes trailing all months of this year except January and February (months where sales are generally low). Low fuel prices were no doubt a major reason for this result. The Fusion, Camry, Optima, and C-Max hybrids did well compared to September, but only the Optima did well compared to year-ago. On a year-to-date basis, the Avalon, Sonata, CT 200h, and Lincoln MKZ have done well. Of course, the volume-leading Prius (all three versions) are not doing well, bringing the entire category down. This is likely to continue over the next year as the Prius is at the end of its current product cycle. The same is true for the Camry which is also a high-volume player.

Diesel volume is continuing at the lower levels of recent months, with a share of 0.72 percent which trails year-to-date figures. The Cruze diesel remains at modest levels of 2 to 3 percent (due in our view to pricing), while the Ram EcoDiesel is reportedly reaching 10 percent, with Chrysler planning to increase production volume to as high as 20 percent in response. (Our figures do not include the Ram EcoDiesel as we have not had access to them.) Of course, the Jetta and Passat (the category leaders) determine the status of the category and they remain at levels below that of previous periods. Availability of the Jetta has declined in recent months given the launch of Golf production at the Mexican plant which also produces the Jetta. The Passat continues to struggle (overall and the diesel version), with little expectation of a change going forward.
