October 2013 Dashboard

The HybridCars.com monthly sales dashboard is a collaboration of HybridCars.com and Baum & Associates, a Michigan-based market research firm focusing on automotive issues including the hybrid and electric vehicle market.

Hybrid sales this past month were essentially even with both September and October 2012. This is particularly interesting since the three Prius models were all down compared to month-ago and year-ago levels. Obviously, other models had to pick up the slack, and the Fusion, Avalon, Lexus ES, Lexus RX, and Honda Civic all did so.

The Accord Hybrid also launched this month (supplementing the low-volume Accord Plug in Hybrid which has been in the market for several months). In coming months, the Malibu Hybrid will essentially be replaced by the standard Malibu which will offer stop-start technology that results in better mileage than the mild hybrid that has been offered. As a result, this product will be phased out.

Year-to-date, the growth in the Fusion and C-Max hybrids (41,000 units) represents sixty percent of the overall growth in the hybrid market. Toyota’s entries have resulted in an additional 20,000 units year-to-date.

October resulted in the best-ever share of the market for plug-in vehicles at 0.84 percent including sales volume estimates for the Tesla Model S and Fiat 500.

Sales of the Volt, Leaf, and Prius PHEV in were all around 2,000 each. We continue to conservatively estimate Model S sales since production is now being split between Europe and North America (with a very small number now available in China). Production of the Volt is still constrained since new versions of the Malibu and Impala have recently been introduced to the Hamtramck, Michigan plant where the Volt is made.

Sales of both the Fusion and C-Max Energi (plug-ins) were over 1,000 each, an all time high for the Fusion Energi. The Leaf and the Volt are going down to the wire for the plug in sales crown, each over 18,000 with two months remaining in the year.

The rate of growth in diesel sales continues to lag the market, with share under one percent. The Jetta and Passat are the segment leaders, and new entrants such as the Cruze are still relatively modest. Pricing on the Cruze is no doubt responsible for the modest results, with 400 to 500 sold over the last three months. If GM decides to price the model more competitively, we would expect sales to improve. Grand Cherokee sales have not yet been reported, and the Ram light duty diesel will not be available until 2014.
