November 2016 Dashboard

The HybridCars.com monthly sales Dashboard is a collaboration of HybridCars.com and Baum & Associates, a Michigan-based market research firm focusing on automotive issues including the hybrid and electric vehicle market.

Overall sales for November were up 4 percent from a strong year-ago result and down 1 percent from October 2016. Through the first 11 months of this year, total sales are essentially flat from last year and we expect sales for the entire year will fall modestly short of last year.

That said, overall sales continue to be extremely strong. As compared to a year-ago, November sales were up for full electrics, plug in hybrids, and hybrids, but down for diesels. The same is true for November sales as compared to October.

Battery electric vehicle sales had a good month even though Tesla sales were lower than in many recent months. This is because production – and therefore sales – were down due to the inclusion of new autonomy hardware and continuing production issues with the new content. This hardware is related to Autopilot 2.0 which has superseded the original hardware. Production took off in mid-November, and we expect production and sales going forward will increase dramatically as Tesla seeks to meet its ambitious targets for the quarter and year.

Of course, the Model X volumes were minimal in 2015 so even modest volumes this year lead to strong growth. The Nissan Leaf continues to struggle and will until it is updated even though a minor update to the battery is now fully available. The BMW i3 will not be updated until 2018 (similar to the Leaf) so sales of this model will also be modest for some time. Modest numbers of the Chevy Bolt will likely be sold in December as production has already begun. For the year as a whole, many battery electrics are down, with Tesla providing all of the growth. Battery electric sales as a share of total sales in November were in line with year-to-date results.

Plug in hybrids were up sharply from last month, and strongly ahead of year-ago levels. The key players all showed strong growth, led by the Chevy Volt and the Ford Fusion Energi (the latter of which has been recently updated in line with the “regular” Fusion model). The Prius Prime has finally launched and almost 800 copies were sold in November. Clearly sales will increase in the coming months as this product becomes fully available. The Volt enjoyed its best sales level since August 2013 although sales have been above 2,000 monthly since June. The update of the Volt has led to higher sales this year. The share of total sales for plug ins this month is much higher than year-to-date totals and is in fact the highest monthly rate to date.

Hybrid sales in November were up from October and year-ago. The Prius Liftback had a much stronger month as compared to October, although the year-to-date total still trails 2015. The RAV4 and Fusion hybrid join the Prius Liftback as the best sellers in the category. The next two sellers are the Honda Accord and Hyundai Sonata and each are showing growth in recent months. The category remains down year-to-date, although overall sales for November are up from October and November 2015. While the Prius Liftback is down for the year, it remains the category leader by a wide margin followed by the RAV4 and Fusion.

Negotiations between the EPA, California, and Volkswagen continue on the 3.0-liter diesel engine and the U.S. judge has extended the deadline in order to give them more time to reach agreement. All VW products remain off the market and it appears that they may remain so. An Audi and/or Porsche product may return to the market, but that will not happen soon and volumes will be very modest. Thus, the category continues to be dominated by the Ram Pickup, Ford Transit and theChevy Colorado and GMC Canyon. The Jaguar XF has been added as has the Mercedes GLS-Class, although volumes for both are very modest. Excluding the VW products, diesel sales so far this year are up 7.3 percent, running well ahead of the overall market.
