Onboard Generators

After learning that the big diesel engines on cruise ships are merely Electricity generators that supply power the electric motors that directly turn their screws, I though this should work on a vehicle too. Has any company looked into or tried to develop a car with only electric drive motors, and a small fossil fuel generator? It seems that a small generator at a hardware store that runs all day on a few gallons while putting out enough wattage to power a house should provide enough juice for a small car.....

industrial vehicles run similar. they run the engine to the most efficient RPM, then engage the transmission to adjust the speeds.
i don't see why your scheme wouldn't work for a car. except the old lack of horse power & excitement some people still want.
see ya
variation on a theme. Recently been looking at buying an electric moped/scooter to get around and avoid gas costs. Downside is for the few longer trips i do it doesnt have the range. Whilst looking at the problem found a guy who had an electric "vespa" and a very small compact generator. He had slightly modified the generator so that for longer trips he could take off the small luggage boot behind the seat and snap on his little genny. This would allow him to essentially run the bike as a hybrid scooter, extending his range as far as he had fuel for the genny. (about 4 litres for 6 hour run time i believe)
Yes...that does seem like an interesting idea but wouldn't it be more effective on big-scale objects....hence the ship?
It seems the Ecological side of auto making has yet to release its favorite subject..the ADD-Ons require POWER..and the Elecric Motor can only Go-So-Far..
I have always wondered why there is NOT one single SOLAR Powered Device in todays consumer automobile(Hybrid)or NOT..where's the Solar Panel..??
Maybe just to power the dashboard..or the satellite radio..the Turn Signals and the GPS..why is there no LEAD-in on the Solar Panel..I find it difficult to imagine a lack of this component..even just for some obscure device..
..
Right from the start I could only imagine the Consumer(range)Automobile..of electric design..a possible array of three generators running from Ethanol Only(tiny)Power Plant(1/4-HP)unit..this stemmed from my dad's Cadillac El Dorado V-8 that could manage to CUT Cylinder's for Gas Mileage Savings..this same type of System could ADD or Subtract the Generator Power Output..via..a triple bank of Generator's..
..
Its still a short range Automobile...I can't see past 25-miles Driving Range..except to ADD in a Get-Me-Home package(like)Propane Engine(onboard)..ya' don't want to be Late-For-Dinner..
..
But if you consider the DirtyAir.....there is a market for a Short Range CLEAN-Air Vehicle..like a Mom's Car..Ol' Folks car.."I don't need a Pick-Up" Person's Car..
..
Triple Bank of Generator's ethanol powered @1/4 hp.
If electricity is generated by the spinning of turbine, why couldn't a device be created to generate electricity from the spinning of the wheels. Thereby creating power to continue driving as one drives?
It can and does, however, as the generator creates electricity from the spinning wheels, it drags on the wheels to slow them down until finally the car stops.
This is used by hybrids for braking.
