Nissan And EVgo Bringing Fast Charging From Boston To The Capital

Nissan and the EVgo charging network are collaborating to bring fast charging to electric vehicle drivers going between Boston and Washington, D.C.

That 500-mile route on highway I-95 will have 50 fast chargers installed at nine points along the way. They’re being placed at the best locations for EV drivers to access them and will be up and running this fall.

They’re going to be 50 kW chargers for now, but will be capable of going up to 150 kW later on. EVgo prides itself on bringing its fast charging Freedom Stations to highways and is working on a few 150 kW test projects; but for now, 50 kW fast charging is the norm for non-Tesla Superchargers.

While Nissan and other Asian automakers have used the CHAdeMO standard for fast charging, these stations will get both CHAdeMO and CCS fast chargers installed on the I-95 route.

Nissan and EVgo have worked together in the past to bring the charging infrastructure to the world, and BMW has joined in a few times. One of the promotional efforts from Nissan and EVgo has been the “No Charge to Charge” program. EV owners in the Dallas-Fort Worth and greater Houston areas were given unlimited access to the eVgo network for public charging stations for their first year of ownership at no cost.

As Autoblog points out, Nissan Leaf drivers will appreciate the Boston-to-Washington fast charging stations, but they’re going to have to make several stops and add time to get there. At the 107-mile range available now in the Leaf, that would need at least five stops along the way and a minimum of two-and-a-half hours for the charging.

If the next-generation Leaf is unveiled this fall with increased range, the charging sessions could be cut in half – if Nissan’s claim of selling a 200-plus mile Leaf comes to be. If the next-generation battery used in the latest Zoe from sister brand Renault is used in the Leaf, that would be closer to 186 miles per charge in “real world” range.

Still, it would cut down on the stops for charging and installation of the 150 kW stations will make it even better.
