Fisker Will Produce $39,000 Plug-in Hybrid

Fisker Automotive will make a $39,000 plug-in hybrid, according to a report on Earth2Tech.com. Ray Lane, managing partner at venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins, which invested in Fisker, said the start-up carmaker will make the official announcement in the next week or two.

Lane was speaking at the AlwaysOn Going Green conference in Sausalito, Calif. on Tuesday. The Fisker Karma, the company’s first vehicle, is an $87,000 plug-in hybrid. It will go on sale later this year. Lane said the less expensive future model is for people “who would not want to buy a Fisker Karma if you could afford it.”

Fisker Automotive, which has already raised about $100 million since its founding in 2007, would need additional funds to build an auto factory and produce a cheaper plug-in hybrid in volume.

We know what the Fisker Karma looks like, its performance, and how much it cost. Now we know that a cheaper Fisker is coming out, but what is its performance and what will it look like. Hopefully, they will provide more info soon.

How about using the Fremont NUMMI manufacturing plant to produce new plug-ins or electric vehicles. Toyota and GM have walked away. It's Silicon Valley location may be just the ticket to bring new technology to the market quicker and at a cheaper price.

Forget the Fremont plant. It's an old, high-volume facility that Toyota walked away from because it was not competitive. While using it "might" get some jobs back, it would not be a showcase for what Fisker or any other EV maker is trying to do.
