Clean Diesels Poised for Continued Growth in U.S.

I'm waiting for a diesel hybrid! I know this makes for a more expensive car, but I bet that they could get mileage in the 60's or higher, without sacrificing size or safety!

I think it is funny that they refer to them as "oil burners". Lets all remember that "gasoline" is deriverd from the same oil, and it is more refined. In the clean diesel they are just doing some refining in the engine.

Oh, and us Americans are getting the short end of diesel technology. That Cruze diesel has been in production for awhle in Australia, and I know there is a 60mpg Ford Focus or Festiva in GB. The automakers won't bring them here because the American car buyer won't buy them. They only understand dollars and sense, buy the enough of the foriegn cars and they will offer them.

So the TDi gets 9mpg more than the non diesel Jetta on the highway?

That's great! Oh by the way. Don't forget to add an extra 10% (or more depending on where you live) in weekly fuel costs. Also, the base TDi is $6,000 more than the base Jetta. According to VW's website.

So for $6,000 more, plus 10% increase in fuel costs you get an extra 9 mpg highway. Sounds reasonable to me.

Not sure where the 9 mpg improvement over the base gasoline version comes from. In the automatic transmission versions, the highway mileage is more like 13 mpg greater (42 mpg vs 29 mpg).

Even if you take the 9 mpg improvement, 42/33 = 27.3% increase in fuel mileage, which is greater than the 10% increase in fuel cost. According to EPA 5-cycle mileage data, in a mix of highway/city driving, the difference is more like 40%, again >>10%. In the new Passat (and the Audi A3), the difference is almost 50%.

The price differential for the vehicles themselves is more like $2500 if you include all of the standard equipment that is otherwise optional on the base Jetta. Based on historical data, that difference is more or less maintained at trade in.

Does anyone know what happens with emissions in these vehicles, over the lifespan of the car? We might be depending on motorists to keep these cars well serviced as they get old, to preserve us from death by cancer. I think a hybrid, by using electricity for some propulsion, will be better than pure petrol even when unserviced. An unserviced petrol car will be bad, and an unserviced diesel... Have you ever been stuck behind one? Can hardly see for the particulates!

There is a diesel hybrid coming, and it sounds exciting: its a diesel plugin hybrid with amazing economy from Volvo.

I've had diesels since 1979. Oil companies are aware of fact that if all vehicles were diesel we would import no oil and competitive costs of fuel would be driven down, down, down!!

I have always owned various V8 engine BMWs, VWs and a Land Rover for the past 15 years. I recently purchased a VW Jetta Wagon TDI. I am so impressed that I keep looking for other TDI options by other car makers. My average mpg is 36. In comparison my V8 engine cars always averaged between 14-17 mpg. What I did not expect is how much fun the high torque brings to the driving experience. I only hope that more Americans begin to learn and love turbo diesel engines. Maybe then we can have true choices like Europeans have had for years. Once you own one, it has hard to go back to gas engines. My other car is a BMW 650i convertible. I have more fun driving the Jetta TDI with the Dual Clutch transmission?!
