May 2013 Dashboard

The HybridCars.com monthly sales dashboard is a collaboration of HybridCars.com and Baum & Associates, a Michigan-based market research firm focusing on automotive issues including the hybrid and electric vehicle market.

Hybrid sales from April to May increased more than overall sales, while diesel and electric sales narrowly trailed the increase in overall sales. Relative to last May, hybrid and electric sales did much better than the overall market, while diesel sales actually fell from year-ago levels. The same is true for year-to-date sales.

Nissan Leaf sales have reached around 2000 monthly for the last three months, while the Chevy Volt is in the range of 1500 monthly. As even some diehard fans on the GM-Volt forum have said, it seems that GM should apply some marketing efforts to the Volt as the market should support more volume. Clearly, price and availability has helped the Leaf, and GM may need to apply more attention to the Volt.

May was another strong month for trucks, which makes it somewhat more difficult for alternative vehicle sales to grow (since they are underrepresented in the truck segment). Nevertheless, the most important hybrid product, the Prius Liftback showed strong growth (well above the overall market), as did the Camry hybrid.

The Fusion Energi (plug in) continues to build volume, although its overall numbers are modest.

The Fusion hybrid seems to have reached a level state, as has the C-Max hybrid. The Lincoln MKZ hybrid appears to be capacity constrained, volume should increase going forward.

Diesel volumes remain constrained, but the Cruze and Grand Cherokee diesels will arrive shortly, followed this fall by the Ram diesel.
