March 2015 Dashboard

The HybridCars.com monthly sales dashboard is a collaboration of HybridCars.com and Baum & Associates, a Michigan-based market research firm focusing on automotive issues including the hybrid and electric vehicle market.

Overall sales for March were strong and the industry showed continuing improvement from one year-ago, in part due to better weather this year in many – if not all – parts of the country.

Battery electric vehicles had a good month while the other alternative categories did not perform as well. This is primarily due to the continuing launch of new products among battery electrics. That said, the various alternative vehicle segments obtained growth rates in line or slightly ahead of the overall market as compared to February.

Sales for full electric vehicles were up strongly from a year-ago as noted due to a number of new entrants, and this is for one month-ago and year-to-date. Tesla had an exceptional month with stronger production (particularly of the P85D) allowing for higher volume. The Leaf recovered from two very weak months, although still below year-ago. The BMW i3 remains consistent selling approximately 1,000 per month. The share of the market attributable to electric vehicles is 0.4 percent which has been consistent this year.

Plug in hybrids continue to experience low volumes with the category leaders selling at modest levels. The three category leaders are the Ford Fusion Energi, Ford C-Max Energi, and the Chevrolet Volt. While the C-Max Energi had a relatively good month, it remains flat vs. last year, unlike the Fusion Energi, Volt, and Prius Plug-in which are all down from last year through three months.

The hybrid category is at the very least consistent maintaining its now modest results in terms of share and volume. As noted previously, the strength in trucks is not helpful for hybrids, which are generally overrepresented in cars. Toyota just announced a hybrid entry for the popular RAV4, but that will of course not appear until later this year. The Prius “family” of hybrids enjoyed growth above the overall market from February, but still remain below year-ago levels. Among the Prius hybrids, the Prius V is the strongest player (in terms of growth rates, the Liftback remains the highest selling vehicle). The share of the overall market and year-to-date for hybrids is incredibly consistent at 2.2 percent, down from last March’s 2.9 percent or 2.7 percent for the first three months of 2014.

Diesel sales for March were up from last month with respect to market share, although still down year-to-date. The three major VW products, Passat, Jetta, and Golf, all enjoyed strong gains, but slow sales in January and February have held down year-to-date results. Two products have been added, namely the VW Golf Sportwagon Diesel and the Ram Promaster Diesel.
