March 2010 Hybrid Dashboard: Where Are the Numbers?

Dear Readers,

Thanks for your feedback on the timing of the hybrid dashboard numbers. Here’s the problem: Toyota, Ford and Honda are reporting their numbers–but General Motors, Nissan and Mercedes did not report them for March. That leaves the dashboard lacking half its manufacturers. Through our partnership with R.L. Polk, we can get a complete set of numbers (via new car registrations), but that complete set will not be available until about six weeks after the close of the month.

We are trying to source more timely numbers, but the delayed yet complete set is our likely direction. Our goal, all along, has to been to create the most thorough tracking of hybrid sales available anywhere.

Feedback welcomed and encouraged. Sorry for the inconvenience.

    Gentlemen,

as an owner of a 2005 Toyota Prius, I appreciate all your efforts to provide us with an accurate and complete report.

I will be patiently looking forward to the March hybrid dashboard report whenever it will be available.

    Best regards,

    Joseph Papay

That is almost funny – I’ve been working on some comparisons between MSRP and production volume using March data, and was waiting on the new Dashboard to finish the picture. Guess I can wait a few weeks, thanks for your diligent work over the years!

I prefer to have the info up as soon as it’s available, even if that’s only for Toyota, Honda and Ford. These three are the biggest hybrid selling manufacturers. We can’t let a few tiny fishes blocking the flow of info. and we have to be able to PUSH those lagging to move forward.

While we work out our process, here are March 2010 numbers for Toyota, Ford and Honda:

    Ford Escape Hybrid – 1,168
    Ford Fusion Hybrid – 1,670
    Honda Civic Hybrid – 579
    Honda Insight – 1,652
    Lexus GS 450h – 31
    Lexus HS250h – 1,494
    Lexus 600h – 9
    Lexus 450h – 1,251
    Mercury Mariner Hybrid – 98
    Mercury Milan Hybrid – 114
    Toyota Camry Hybrid – 1,549
    Toyota Highlander Hybrid – 594
    Toyota Prius – 11,786

Looks like total hybrid sales were 23,274, including all makers–even those not listed.

The total sales (23,274) are up 40.8% vs. last month that is a good news but U.S. sales are in a shadow of Japan sales in our days:
    Prius: a whOOping record of 35,546 !!!
    Insight: 5,397

I am wondering why Toyota does not want to sell Highlander hybrid?
Back in 2006 Toyota sold 2,500 Highlander hybrids per month. Now it is only 600 per month. Back in 2006 Highlander hybrid was available in FWD for $33,000. Today Highlander hybrid is only available in 4WD for $39,000 (with a mandatory $3,600 extra package). The reason for lower sales is clear – lower fuel efficiency (4WD) and much higher cost (mandatory extra package). Why Toyota does not want to sell 2000 more hybrids per month?

You really make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this topic to be really something which I think I would never understand. It seems too complicated and very broad for me.
