I’m glad the EPA severely tightened the emissions standards on diesels. Now if only they would include the big trucks Ford F250/350 + 18 wheelers with these restrictions I could breath fresh air while I’m on the freeway (cough cough).

Unless Honda employs their continuous hydrocarbon selective catalytic reduction technology on the diesel Accord–which is only in the prototype stage right now–they cannot legally sell the car in the U.S. as of January 1, 2007. That is when the EPA Tier 2 Bin 5 standards came into effect for passenger cars sold in the U.S. Tier 2 Bin 5 places a limit of 0.07 g NOx/mile and 0.01 g particulate/mile. This NOx standard is about 6x lower than the current Euro 4 emission standard. Honda, however, claims the new technology will hit U.S. shores in 2009 in a diesel Accord (Scientific American, March 2007, 296, 3, pp. 80 – 88.).

I've read on this website that the Honda Accord is the FASTEST sedan on the market. (Just goes to show Rush and the conservatives don't know what they're talkin about.)

Anyway, why doesn't Honda ever ADVERTISE the Accord this way? There are plenty of people who want fast cars, but very few seem to know about the accord.

On the other hand, a large advertising effort promoting the Accord Hybrid has a muscle care might potential hybrid (Civic) buyers who are just beginning to associate hybrids with superior fuel economy.

True the tax rebate is going to fall but not by a couple of thousand dollars. The drop is from $1,500+ to $700+ and the higher gas prices for April as well as the incentives that Toyota has placed on the Prius will keep the decline in April sales modest.

As for the Accord you are absolutely right they should bring the diesel Accord to the U.S. and make it a hybrid with a stronger electrical side than the current Hybrid Accord. It would another first for Honda and we would be able to see if Diesel hybrids are in fact the best of both worlds.

Rush Limbaugh is strictly here for comic relief and his show is entertaining...although I think it's sad he believes what he's saying.

Ummmm, guys … You should have noted in this piece that, if I understand it correctly, the tax incentives for hybrid purchase expire (or fall) this month for Toyota because it’s reached its limit of 60K vehicles/year. My bet is that Prius sales take a sharp dip once a couple of thousand dollars of tax reduction goes away.

Great news on all of these numbers. I think the increase in the Camry, Altima and Escape numbers are impressive and reveal a more sustainable and varied market. Hopefully Honda can redirect their efforts for the Accord.
