We salute any effort to increase fuel economy and reduce tailpipe emissions—regardless of the size and shape of the vehicle. But the Escalade Hybrid from Cadillac is hard to take seriously. The combination of conservation and ostentation is weird. The Cadillac Escalade Hybrid is a 17-foot-long vehicle that can seat eight and offers real-world fuel economy in the high teens. And with that said, you’d think the 2014 ELR might have been seen with a bit more leniency, but the market is not yet rewarding a $76,000 Volt-based 2-door coupe based on a 2009 design, and with the Volt due for replacement. Beyond this, what’s up Cadillac’s sleeve? No telling, but GM’s people do say they’re working on more.
