uktiger: You are obviously too young to remember Jimmy Carter, with REAL gas shortages, rationing, lines, and prices in adjusted terms just as high as today. Home mortgage interest rates were 18% (around 6% today), inflation rate was 13.5% (slightly over 4% now), and unemployment at over 7% (5.1 % today). In fact, the "Misery Index" was created for the Carter presidency, a number combining the inflation rate and unemployment rate, which was as high as 22% under Carter (8% today and 7.8% under Clinton).

I guess the idea of car sharing should be applauded IF it reduces the number of automobiles in dense urban environments. Unfortunately, these programs seem to be aimed at solving cost and convenience issues for urban dwellers rather than ecological concerns. I think the bicycle sharing programs make more sense for the planet.

We need to ask ourselves, though, if we really want to find ways to facilitate jamming even more people into already stressed out urban centers.
